"I knew we had to come this way. And that place seems familiar to me somehow, even though I've never seen it before. I really want to know what's going on behind that wall—I have a feeling it might be important."

Chapter description[]

Ivypool takes stock of her companions as the gulls continue swarming outside the cave. Whistlepaw mentions that the birds' cries remind her of the way the mysterious kits were crying in her dream and worries that the kits may have been trapped in a cave themselves. Ivypool dozes for a while, and she wakes to hear Dovewing complaining about her feet being wet. The cats notice water flowing in and out of the cave, and when they look back outside, they see the sun-drown-water has risen. They scramble back up the cliffs and decide to continue on, looking for prey.
As they begin to look for a place to make camp for the night, they find Twoleg garbage. They ignore it and continue on, eventually encountering a strange Twoleg den. It unnerves them all, but they quickly recover upon seeing mice feeding on Twoleg garbage inside. They catch and share several mice and begin discussing if they should continue forward before making camp. Before they can agree, a Twoleg startles them, and they hear it yell at the same time an animal cries out in pain. Whistlepaw suggests making camp where they are for the night, explaining that it feels familiar, and that she wants to know what is happening to the other animals.
