Chapter description[]
- Ivypool dreams of her lakeside meetings with Rootspring, thinking about her kit, Bristlefrost. Ivypool remembers how Rootspring had loved Bristlefrost from the day she had saved his life, and how proud she had been of her daughter's bravery. She sits down, waiting for the SkyClan tom, knowing that their chat will not take her pain away completely. As she waits, she hears a banging noise, and the dream changes to show the lake covered in ice, with Bristlefrost trapped beneath the surface. Ivypool tries to save her, but when she manages to break through the ice, Rootspring appears behind her and tells her it is too late.
- She wakes from the dream and realizes what it means: she will never reach Bristlefrost again. She sits up and sees Rootspring sitting away from the others, having woken from his own dream. Ivypool describes hers, and Rootspring explains that he often dreams of the life he and Bristlefrost would have had together. Rootspring tells Ivypool that the dreams feel like memories, and how he knows they never happened yet remembers them as if they did. Ivypool is heartbroken for both herself and Rootspring, yet grateful that her daughter had a cat who had been so devoted to her. The thought comforts her slightly.
- Once the others wake up, they hunt and feast on more mice. Whistlepaw tells the other cats that she has had another dream about the strange Twoleg den, and they decide to investigate. Inside, they pass several cages filled with strange animals, all smelling of fear and blood. After a while, Ivypool hears speech that she and the other cats understand, and when they turn to see where the voice came from, they see two tall, solid tabbies with bushy, blunt tails.
