Chapter description[]
- The Clan cats stare at the strange cat-like creatures, and Ivypool watches as the two step forward. Rootspring and Icewing stand beside Ivypool as she asks if the tabbies are kittypets. The two tabbies seem surprised that they speak the same language, and go on to explain that they were captured by Twolegs. They introduce themselves as Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr, and express concern for Stalk Purr's unborn kits. Stalk Purr explains that she has had two other litters, but they did not survive.
- Tumble Leap tells the cats that Twolegs have destroyed much of their home, and that many of their kind left to find better territory, promising to come back. Dovewing offers her sympathy and shocks the tabbies when she mentions that they have their Clanmates to help look after everyone. Stalk Purr asks if they call themselves Clans too, and Rootspring explains that they have for generations, wondering if there is some connection between the groups.
- Whistlepaw pads forward and draws the symbol she saw in her dreams, asking the wildcats about it. Stalk Purr tells the Clan cats that the symbol is for StormClan, and Ivypool wonders what else they have in common, hoping they have discovered something vital to their quest. Whistlepaw explains that the symbol came to her in a vision and asks about a tree that looks burned out from the inside. Stalk Purr is not sure what it is, but explains that it reminds her of where previous generations of wildcats went to communicate with their ancestors.
- Whistlepaw asks if they could tell the Clan cats where the Star Tree is, but Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr do not completely remember. Ivypool asks them to tell the others more about their Clan. Tumble Leap explains that they lived in a large group, with their own borders and fights, and Ivypool thinks that it sounds exactly like a regular Clan. He explains that they did not have a StarClan, but that the elders who lead their Clan would walk into the tree and speak to their ancestors there. Ivypool asks if the wildcats' Clanmates could help, but Stalk Purr sadly explains that she and Tumble Leap are the only two wildcats left that they know of.
- Ivypool begs Stalk Purr to tell her more about the Star Tree, hoping they might find more wildcats there. Stalk Purr begins to describe the location: a clearing in the forest, close to the top of a waterfall. Whistlepaw asks if they have ever spoken to their ancestors, and Stalk Purr tells her that only elders could do so. Ivypool urges them to join the Clan cats, in the hopes that, together, they can find the other wildcats. The two wildcats are reluctant to leave; even though their Twoleg is cruel, they are no longer starving. They urge the Clan cats to leave when the Twoleg emerges from his den, not wanting them to be caught and trapped in a cage themselves.
