Chapter description[]
- Ivypool and the others emerge from the Star Tree, not realizing how long their conversation with Galestar took. Dovewing, still standing guard, tells them to eat and explain to her what they found. The other cats begin to explain and Dovewing is shocked that Stripestar and Galestar forced their Clans to merge just so they could be mates. When Ivypool brings up how Galestar fell in love with Bound Hunt and moved on from Stripestar, she sees Rootspring look away, assuming that he is thinking about Bristlefrost. They prepare to travel back to the Twoleg den where Tumble Leap, Stalk Purr, and their unborn kits are being held hostage, intent on freeing them.
- As they travel, Ivypool notices how quiet Whistlepaw is, and asks if she is okay. Whistlepaw explains how frustrated she is over the cats of StarClan not remembering StormClan. It reminds Ivypool of Bristlefrost, and she wonders how her daughter could have vanished when she thinks about her every day. Rootspring chimes in that the story feels too important to have been forgotten, especially with two leaders becoming mates when he had to travel to the Dark Forest and back just to have the warrior code changed. Whistlepaw questions whether or not Galestar and Stripestar actually broke the code, as they did not technically switch Clans. Rootspring sarcastically remarks that they just destroyed the Clans instead to create a new one. Bitterly, he adds that he and Bristlefrost could have done the same. Whistlepaw apologizes, and Rootspring's irritation fades.
- Rootspring expresses his own frustration, knowing he and Bristlefrost did not get the chance to be together while others bent the rules. Ivypool is sympathetic as she explains that StormClan did not last due to their actions, citing that ThunderClan and WindClan still exist due to former StormClan cats returning to the forest. Ivypool points out how much pain Galestar caused when she did not return to her Clan, and tells the others how much she struggled with Dovewing leaving and eventually joining ShadowClan to be with Tigerstar. Dovewing explains that it had been difficult for her as well, and that if she could have combined ShadowClan and ThunderClan, she would have. Ivypool, while soothed by the thought, explains that she would never want to lose her ThunderClan identity, but Rootspring expresses his wish for ThunderClan and SkyClan to have merged so he could have been with Bristlefrost.
- Icewing interrupts them as they get closer to the Twoleg den containing the wildcats. With sunset approaching, Ivypool agrees that this will be a good time to speak with the wildcats, but they are all forced to wait for the Twolegs to disperse. As soon as they are able to, the Clan cats jump down into the den and seek out the cages where the wildcats are trapped. Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr are happy to see them, as they thought the Clan cats went home, but Whistlepaw explains that they found the Star Tree and talked with their ancestors. Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap are skeptical, even as Rootspring tells them that they spoke with Galestar and Icewing mentions knowing they will name their kits Pounce, Stretch, and Hunt.
- Annoyed and frustrated, Ivypool tells the wildcats that Galestar advised them to rescue Stalk Purr and Tumble Leap, as the Twoleg plans on giving their kits away. She reveals that Galestar told them there are more wildcats living in the mountains, and that they could be a Clan again. Tumble Leap apologizes for not believing them, as he and his mate had lost hope, and the group begins to plan how they will break the wildcats out.
