Chapter description[]

Icewing leads the Clan cats and wildcats back in the direction of the sun-drown-place. Ivypool watches Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr move, fascinated by how graceful they are despite their size. After a while of traveling, the group begins to slow down, and Ivypool requests to stop. Icewing explains that she has been looking out for water, but has not seen anywhere to drink or find prey. Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr scent the air, confident in their abilities, though Ivypool and the others remain skeptical. The wildcats locate a pool of fresh water, explaining that their kind are raised to believe in a deep connection to the elements, as they contain the spirits of their ancestors. It reminds Rootspring of the Sisters and how they raise toms to connect to the earth. He explains that he used to think his father, Tree, was just strange, but now understands a bit more. The wildcats admit that it feels strange to be back in the wild and away from Twolegs, and Dovewing reassures them that their instincts will return.
They reach the spiky black rocks from Whistlepaw's vision, and the Clan cats set out to hunt. Whistlepaw encounters a strange round blob, and the cats wonder if it is prey. Rootspring takes a bite out of it, discovering that it is inedible, while Icewing and Dovewing return with their own catches. Ivypool worries over Stalk Purr's litter, especially with how small their meal is, but a gull swoops down and startles the group. Stalk Purr catches it, and Icewing points out that the technique she used looks similar to how the Tribe of Rushing Water hunts. Before they settle in to eat, and the wildcats lead the group through giving thanks for their meal, similar to how the Clans thank StarClan for their prey.
As they eat, Ivypool reflects on the differences between the two sets of cats, and how she feels they belong together. Tumble Leap asks more about Galestar, prompting Icewing to recount the story of how they entered the Star Tree and met several spirits. Galestar told them that she led WindClan and fell in love with Stripestar, the ThunderClan leader, before combining their Clans into StormClan. Stalk Purr interjects that she remembers the story, and Tumble Leap adds that several wildcats tried to find the Clans to restore their numbers. When two wildcats left and never returned, the entire group decided that Galestar never existed, and that the Clans were a story for kits instead.
Stalk Purr tells the Clan cats how surprised her and Tumble Leap had been, seeing Clan cats in real life, after assuming for so long they were nothing more than a story. Ivypool tells them she hopes they did not disappoint, and Tumble Purr insists that they are just as impressive as the stories say. Whistlepaw tells the wildcats how surprised the Clan cats were to see them, as she had been having visions that she did not understand until they met. She thanks StarClan for bringing the two groups together, and Tumble Leap thanks the spirits of air, earth, and water for guiding them all to this point.
As the cats settle in to rest for the night, Ivypool watches the sunset over the sun-drown-place. It reminds her of Bristlefrost, and she realizes she has not thought about her lost daughter all day, as escaping the Twoleg den and returning to the sun-drown-place occupied her thoughts. She thinks about the wildcats' beliefs, and wonders if her daughter is in the sunset, though she dismisses the thought as it is not one of her own beliefs. She continues to watch the sunset, however, and admires how lovely it is.
