Chapter description[]

The cats cats find the trail leading into the mountains, though they are exhausted from how long the quest has been. Stalk Purr visibly struggles, and Ivypool worries about the wildcat's kits coming before they find the place they're searching for. As they near the top of the hill and stand on the crest, they look over a dense woodland nestled in a valley between two mountains. As they continue towards the forest, Stalk Purr explains her worry and guilt to Ivypool over her kits, wondering if she has made the right choice. Ivypool comforts her, reflecting on her own kits, and Stalk Purr perks up as she thinks about the fact that her kits will be born free.
Ivypool goes quiet, and Stalk Purr worries she has said something wrong. Ivypool explains that she lost one of her daughters, Bristlefrost, and that she feels stuck as she continues to grieve. Stalk Purr explains that she felt the same way when she lost her prior litters, like the sadness would never end, but that reminding herself that her kits live on in the spirits of the earth has helped. Ivypool tells Stalk Purr that there is no more Bristlefrost, as she died in the Dark Forest, and because of that, her spirit is also dead. Stalk Purr kindly challenges her beliefs, asking Ivypool if she knew of wildcats before this quest, or if she had ever seen the sun-drown-place. When Ivypool tells her no, Stalk Purr explains that the world is bigger than anyone knows, and that includes the afterlife.
Shocked, Ivypool realizes Stalk Purr may be right: the Clans are limited to their own understanding of what happens after death, but that does not mean that it is the only answer. Even though she knows she may not see Bristlefrost again, her daughter's spirit could still live on in any form. The thought breathes new life into Ivypool's heart, her grief finally lessening as she realizes how lucky she is to be on this journey. She is comforted by the fact that she got to know Bristlefrost at all, let alone as long as she did, because she may have never known her at all. Ivypool thanks Stalk Purr, and the wildcat licks her ear in response. The cats reach a Thunderpath and prepare to cross it. Before they can, however, Rootspring stops them with a startled yowl.
