| "I don't know why they haven't 'spread.' But yes, they are still here—lots of them, just over there. They're warning me not to try to cross the Thunderpath here, because this is where they all lost their lives." |

Chapter description[]
- Ivypool is startled by Rootspring's exclamation but sees nothing wrong with the Thunderpath in front of them. Rootspring shouts again to get back from the Thunderpath, pulling Whistlepaw away, and this time the cats obey him. Suddenly, a speeding monster appears around the curve of the Thunderpath, then flashes by. Ivypool shakes in terror at the realization that they all could have died without Rootspring's warning. A bewildered Tumble Leap inquires about the young tom's foreknowledge, and Rootspring explains how several ghosts warned him. He inherited the power from his father, Tree, who came from a group of cats called the Sisters who all share the same gift of seeing the spirits of the deceased. Ivypool recalls how Rootspring discovered the false Bramblestar, but she still finds it peculiar.
- The wildcats are not confused, however, and are instead curious. Rootspring sights ghosts more than he would like to but finds the skill practical. A group of various spirit cats lost their lives on the Thunderpath because of its curvature blocking sight from both monsters and cats, and the trees dampening sounds. One of these spirits guides the journeying cats to a safe crossing spot.
- The party journeys for two more days through the mountains. Icewing worries about returning to RiverClan in time, but Whistlepaw reassures her that they are nearing the end. As the sun sets, they encounter Twolegs wielding strange beams of light from their paws. Eventually they find a waterfall with suitable shelter near it. Dovewing suggests spending the night there but before they can come to a decision, the light-carrying Twolegs return along with a dog. A Twoleg kit notices the cats and points, and a Twoleg approaches Stalk Purr. The scared cats run down towards the river until the Twolegs lose sight of them. Stalk Purr suddenly lets out a gasp of pain and collapses, announcing that her kits are coming.
