Chapter description[]

The wildcat looms over Ivypool and Icewing, demanding to know who they are and why they have come, assuming they are stealing prey. Ivypool retorts that them being strangers is no reason to accuse them of stealing, though the wildcat continues to threaten them with a snarl. Before he can attack, Ivypool suddenly asks the wildcat tom if he wants to know what Galestar told them. He stops, and Ivypool rapidly continues speaking, explaining how they found two wildcats being held hostage by a Twoleg in his den. She adds that the Clan cats rescued them, and the she-cat recently gave birth to three healthy kits. The wildcat tom asks the two she-cats if they belong to the Clans, explaining that it has been a long time since any wildcats had seen Clan cats and that he is a descendant of StormClan.
Icewing explains that they know about StormClan, though the wildcat does not seem convinced until Ivypool draws the strange symbol from Whistlepaw's dream. The wildcat tom is impressed and shocked, and apologizes for trying to run them off before introducing himself as Strike Slash. He leads them deeper into the wildcats' territory, all the way to their camp. As they enter, Icewing and Ivypool both note that the wildcats all look similar, with stocky bodies and brown tabby pelts. Strike Slash goes on to introduce the she-cats to his mate, Wish Stalk, before leading them to their elders.
Strike Slash pauses before they reach the elders, explaining that they function as the group's leaders. Ivypool explains that Clan elders generally help with kits and tell stories, which confuses Strike Slash. He tells them that older cats are able to more easily connect with their ancestors. Ivypool is touched by how reverently he speaks of them and wonders what the Clans would be like if they did the same.
Crossing the clearing, Strike Slash, Wish Stalk, Ivypool, and Icewing stop in front of three wildcats, each with graying streaks in their fur. The first elder, Prowl Sleek, introduces herself and her companions, Hunt Growl and Spring Claw, before prompting the Clan cats to explain themselves. Ivypool and Icewing talk about Whistlepaw's vision, finding Tumble Leap and Stalk Purr, and entering the Star Tree to speak with Galestar. Spring Claw questions why they would travel so far for a group they do not know proper, and the elders decide to keep Ivypool and Icewing under guard until they decide whether or not their story is true.
