Chapter description[]
- Ivypool struggles to sleep, unable to get the sound of the Sisters' wailing out of her head. Frustrated, she eventually leaves the den, eager to get going until she realizes everyone else is still asleep. She wanders away and decides to hunt, stalking a squirrel, and returns back to the camp to find the others waking. Snow compliments Ivypool on the catch, and Ivypool offers her the prey. Snow points out that Ivypool seems anxious to leave, adding that she will also be glad to not see as many toms in their camp. As they share the prey, Ivypool describes the purpose of their quest and asks for directions to the fox-head mountain.
- Snow explains that the Sisters stayed near there for a brief time, noting that the land was no good to settle for long in due to the foul-smelling water and rocky terrain. Snow instructs them to follow the Thunderpath that circles the nearby Twolegplace, and to search for strange, branchless trees to follow their vines toward the mountain. Snow warns Ivypool to watch out for gulls, as they snatch prey from Twoleg kits and she worries what could happen to a cat.
- Ivypool goes to collect her companions, though she cannot find Rootspring right away. She knows he has already said goodbye to Sunrise and Moon, and nearly gives up on finding him before seeing him speaking to Snow. Ivypool notes that he looks unhappy and wonders if the two are arguing, before hiding to eavesdrop. Rootspring tells Snow that he is not interested in taking a mate, but she insists that he is not meant to be alone. Rootspring points out that the Sisters abandon toms early in their lives, but Snow explains that family is important, regardless of the form it takes.
