Chapter description[]
- Whistlepaw experiences a dream where she is by the sun-drown-place. She struggles to keep her balance in the strong wind, and she realizes that she had had this dream before. She briefly admires the shining water, but then panics at the height. Carried by the wind, Whistlepaw then hears cries from kits, but she cannot see them. Guilt crushes her, even though she tells herself that their distress is not her fault. Thick clouds cover the sky, and strong rain falls. Whistlepaw sees a brown tabby tom struggling through the storm, and she realizes that the guilt is coming from him. He solemnly tells her that she must make something right. Whistlepaw is confused, and a group of cats up ahead cries that they have to leave and can return for the kits later. The wails of the kits ring out again, and she feels terrible and attempts to find them. Whistlepaw goes into the cave where the mewling is coming from, and above her, the cats leave. The brown tabby looks at her sadly, and she is astonished that they are abandoning the kits. The clouds then part, and an image of vines and a cloud appears in the sky, and it is silent for a moment. The wailing of the kits then resumes, but before Whistlepaw can reach them, she falls and lands in a forest.
- Whistlepaw wonders where she is, and she walks toward an oddly hollowed-out tree, but darkness soon enfolds her. She thinks about how the dream usually ends here, but the darkness subsides, and she finds herself by the lake. Whistlepaw sees Mistystar: the former leader, who looks agonized, says that a debt must be paid. The she-cat looks at something behind Whistlepaw, and she turns around to find the stream around the camp filled with blood.
