"I can't live as a warrior. But I'll always remember you. You've shown me a life that I've always dreamed about. But now I know where I truly belong."
— Jake to Talltail in Tallstar's Revenge, page 433

Jake is a flame-colored[6] ginger tabby tom with green eyes.[7]

Jake was born to Crystal alongside his littermates, Ferris and Whiskers. He was an oddly adventurous kittypet with a history of frequently friendly interactions with Clan cats while he sat on the fence that borders ThunderClan territory. He befriended Talltail, a WindClan warrior seeking revenge on his father's death, and joined him on his quest. He convinced Talltail that killing Sparrow would not bring justice, nor fix the problem. After their mission was completed, Jake went back to his housefolk, vowing to never forget Talltail or their adventure together. He also befriended Pinestar, ThunderClan's leader, showing his way of life, and later welcomed Pinestar when he decided to become a kittypet. After his death, Jake went to an unnamed afterlife. Jake had two mates; he fathered Tiny, Ruby, and Socks with Quince, and Rusty, Princess, Filou, Tommy, and Luna with Nutmeg. Firestar not only inherited Jake's physical appearance, but he also inherited his father's adventurous and curious nature.

―Jake to Talltail Tallstar's Revenge, page 433
Jake was the best friend of Talltail, later Tallstar, whom he traveled with for a while. Jake eventually temporarily left his Twolegs to go find Sparrow with him,[2] and the two stayed with the rogue group for a while. Although the warrior was intent on revenge, Jake told Talltail to not kill Sparrow to avenge Sandgorse.[16] After Sparrow's attempted murder, Jake and Talltail departed from the rogue group and traveled back to the forest territories, where he parted with Talltail sadly to go return to his Twolegs.[3] Tallstar even states that Firestar was Jake's copy and that the flame-colored ThunderClan leader reminds him of Jake every day.[6][17]

"Just because I'm a kittypet doesn't mean I don't have dreams of something else. I don't want to spend my whole life in the wild, but I'd like to explore beyond the fences, see how other cats live. I know every pawstep of the house-folk place and I'd like to go farther."
―Jake to Talltail Tallstar's Revenge, page 335

Reena: "Aren't you embarrassed?"
Jake: "Embarrassed?"
Reena: "About being a kittypet."
Jake: "Why?"
Reena: "Taking food from a Twoleg. It's undignified for a cat."
Jake: "It is?"
Reena: "A cat should rely on itself, not the kindness of Twolegs."
Jake: "I was born a kittypet. I'm not doing any harm. And if I'm eating kittypet food, it means there's more prey for rogues like you."

Jake: "Do you really want to kill a cat?"
Talltail: "If I'd stayed in WindClan, I'd have probably killed a cat in battle by now!"
Jake: "In battle. That's different. Killing in the heat of battle, to defend your Clanmates—that makes sense. But to kill a cat moons later—"
Talltail: "He never understood the damage he did. That's why he must be punished. To make him sorry."
Jake: "Just tell him! Make him understand. How Sandgorse's death hurt you, and how you feel he's responsible."
Talltail: "Don't you think I tried that when Sandgorse died? He wouldn't admit it. Even when I told him to his whiskers that he killed Sandgorse, he just shrugged it off, like he shrugs everything off. He doesn't care about anything. So I'm going to make him care about this."

"You told me that a leader has to trust his medicine cat. You may be leader, but you are still bound by the warrior code."
―Jake to Pinestar after the battle with WindClan Pinestar's Choice, page 167

«Jake was curious about life in the Clans, but not to the point of wanting to go over the fence into the forest. He was no threat to ThunderClan, even though he knew the deputy and the medicine cat by name, knew where the weakest parts of the border were, and how Pinestar was concerned about the safety of new apprentices. Pinestar had mentioned a WindClan warrior, Talltail, from time to time, and the first question Jake had asked Pinestar today was whether he had seen the long-tailed black and white tom in the battle. Pinestar had assured him that Talltail had not been injured, as far as he knew. Jake was not a Clanmate, but a friend. And Pinestar valued him as much as any of his warriors.»

Jake: "Hey! I didn't think you'd come back. You know, after Shanty..."
Pinestar: "For a while, I wasn't sure I would. But I think I can do some good here...for Shanty's housefolk. More than I can do for my Clan."
Jake: "What do you mean? Have you left ThunderClan?"
Pinestar: "Yes, I have."
Jake: "You'd really give all that up to be a kittypet for Shanty's housefolk?"
Pinestar: "I really would."
Jake: "Shanty would like that, Pinestar. Do you want to go meet some of your new neighbors? You haven't seen Quince yet, have you? She's a sweetheart."
Pinestar: "I should go home. My...my housefolk are expecting me. Oh, and my name isn't Pinestar anymore. It's Pine. Just Pine."
Jake: "It suits you. Welcome home, Pine."
