"You're allowed to do whatever you like. You're not the only cat in RiverClan. There are others. Let them worry. Here, I can look after you the way that I was never able to in life. You've suffered so much already. I want you to be happy."
— Jayclaw to Frostpaw about letting RiverClan sort itself out in Star, page 295

Jayclaw is a thick-furred[7] gray tom[2] with gray eyes and a wide face.[7]

Jayclaw was a RiverClan warrior under Mistystar's leadership in the lake territories. He was born to Mallownose and Petalfur alongside his littermates, Brackenpelt and Owlnose. He and his brother got into a physical argument about their nest, and Willowshine had to treat Jayclaw's injuries. He and Curlfeather later became mates and she bore their kits: Frostkit, Graykit, and Mistkit. Jayclaw died when his kits were still young, and his death was predicted by his daughter, Frostkit. He ascended to StarClan afterwards, and gave Icestar a life for intuition.

History[]

In the A Vision of Shadows arc[]

The Apprentice's Quest[]

He is a warrior named Jayclaw.

River of Fire[]

«On her way to fetch the herbs, Willowshine wondered what could have possessed Jayclaw and Owlnose to get into a fight over something so trivial. They were both reasonable cats, so what was suddenly making them so aggressive?»
—Willowshine about Jayclaw's wounds River of Fire, bonus scene, chapter 1
Jayclaw calls to Willowshine from the top of a bank, interrupting the medicine cat's vision. He leaps down to join her, and she notices the scratches and blood in his fur, startling her. Willowshine asks him what happened, questioning if he had met a fox or badger, causing him to duck his head in embarrassment. The gray tom replies that it was Owlnose, and Willowshine disbelievingly asks if it really was Owlnose. Still not looking at her, Jayclaw explains that they had a sort of discussion over his nest in the warriors' den because his brother had scattered moss and bracken all over the place when he stood on it. Willowshine rolls her eyes in response and asks if they are kits, so Jayclaw apologizes to her and finally looks her in the eyes. He requests some herbs for his scratches, and though Willowshine scolds him a little more, she agrees to get some marigold while he sits and cleans his wounds.
While she is retrieving the herbs, she wonders what could have made Jayclaw and Owlnose fight each other over something so trivial since they are both reasonable toms. She returns and starts squeezing marigold juice into his wounds which causes him to complain, so she retorts that it serves him right for being a mouse-brain. Jayclaw attempts to defend himself, but he stops when he catches sight of the medicine cat's gaze, and instead promises that it will not happen again. She replies that it better not, adding that he is free to go and had better not get into anymore fights. He thanks her and says he will not, springing back up and disappearing. The gray tabby then tells her mentor, Mothwing, about the conflict between the two brothers, and that she treated his wounds with marigold. Mothwing comments that they already have enough trouble, while Willowshine supposes she had better talk to Owlnose too.

In The Broken Code arc[]

Lost Stars[]

At the Gathering, Mistystar announces the birth of his kits, Frostkit, Graykit, and Mistkit.

The Place of No Stars[]

When Mistystar needs a cat to fetch Willowshine, she sends Jayclaw, noting that the tom is a fast cat.

In the A Starless Clan arc[]

River[]

«She'd been too young when Jayclaw died to remember much about her father, but sometimes she wondered how her life might be different if he had lived. Would her mother be so protective of Frostpaw and her littermates?»
—Frostpaw about her father River (book), page 18
Curlfeather reminds Frostpaw that she is special since she had a dream of Jayclaw leaving her alone shortly before he died. Frostpaw wonders if her mother would have always been fiercely protective of her and her littermates if their father had lived.

Sky[]

When Owlnose is chosen to be leader, Frostpaw recalls that he is her father's brother.

Wind[]

When Curlfeather is speaking with Splashtail about their plan to take over RiverClan, she states that she knew RiverClan needed to change after Jayclaw died. In response to Frostpaw's allegations against Curlfeather, Duskfur does not believe that Jayclaw's death could have caused her to try to take over RiverClan.

Star[]

"The hardest thing for me these past moons was seeing Frostdawn's Clanmates turn their tails on her. No cat seemed able to see the truth in my kit's heart or the lies in Splashtail's. With this in mind, I give you, along with this life, the gift of intuition, so that in the future you may discern the truth, however murky the waters seem to be."
―Jayclaw giving Icewing her first life Star, page 315
While unconscious from her injuries, Frostpaw has a dream in which she stands in a field and hears a familiar, loving voice saying her name, and a gray tom approaches her. She recognizes her father, realizing that she is in StarClan. Jayclaw invites her to stay, wishing to show her StarClan's hunting grounds. Seeing his love for her, Frostpaw knows how conditional her mother's love had been, and she desires to stay with Jayclaw. However, she tells him that she needs to tend to her responsibilities, to which Jayclaw suggests that she has done enough for RiverClan and needs to think about herself, promising that he can care for her in StarClan so that she is happy. Frostpaw, tempted by Jayclaw's affection and care, asks if she can stay in StarClan and take care of RiverClan through visions, but her dream suddenly vanishes and she finds herself with Tree. She is distressed, wanting to go to StarClan with her father rather than having to protect RiverClan, but Tree convinces her to try to return to the living.
Frostpaw curls up in her nest in the medicine den, only to find herself returning to her dream with Jayclaw. He insists that she may belong in StarClan rather than with RiverClan, and Frostpaw again feels tempted. When she listens to the river, however, she hears she-cats singing, though Jayclaw tries to dismiss it. He begins to disappear as the singing grows louder, and Frostpaw follows the singing back to the living. During Icewing's leadership ceremony, Jayclaw appears to give her her first life, and Frostdawn feels disappointed that she cannot go to him. Noting the pain he experienced while watching RiverClan abandon Frostdawn, Jayclaw gives Icewing a life for intuition so that she may see the truth. As StarClan welcomes Icestar at the end of her ceremony, Frostdawn feels upset at not being able to speak with her father, but reminds herself that he will appear to her again.
