The Kin of your Kin prophecy is an ancient augury, foretelling the arrival of three cats who will be more powerful than anyone that came before them, including StarClan. The prophecy centers around Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Dovewing, who were granted powers to save the Clans from utter destruction.
Summary[]
The prophecy[]
- The original prophecy was: "There will be three, kin of your kin, who hold the power of the stars in their paws."[1][2][3]
- It has also been reworded several times. In a dream, it is told as, "After the sharp-eyed jay and the roaring lion, peace will come on dove's gentle wing,"[4] and then is elaborated on, saying, "The end of the stars draws near. Three must become four to battle the darkness that lasts forever."[5]
- After the Great Battle, Midnight and Rock deliver the full prophecy, "There will be three cats, kin of your kin, with the power of the stars in their paws. They will find a fourth, and the battle between light and dark will be won. A new leader will rise from the shadows of his death, and the Clans will survive beyond the memories of his memories. This is how it has always been, and how it will always be."[6]
Origins[]
- The origins of the prophecy are said to be beyond the scope of StarClan. Midnight and Rock claim that they saw the prophecy during the first sunrise over the Lake. It is the oldest known prophecy, and has been passed down for generations.
Meaning of the prophecy[]
- Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Dovewing are the cats destined to save the Clans from the Dark Forest.[7] They have each been gifted powers that surpass those of StarClan. Jayfeather is able to walk into and see thoughts and dreams, Lionblaze is invulnerable in battle, and Dovewing is able to sense things from very far away. The cats are all related to Firestar's direct family, with Lionblaze and Jayfeather being his grandsons through Leafpool, and Dovewing being his great-grand-niece through Cloudtail. The interpretation about "dove's gentle wing" refers to how Dovewing was born after the other two cats, bringing peace to the prophecy. The fourth cat refers to Firestar. Together, the three and the fourth aid in the Great Battle between StarClan, the Ancients, the living Clans, and the Tribe of Endless Hunting; against the Dark Forest and their corrupted trainees, Firestar is the one to end the battle by defeating Tigerstar, with Bramblestar assuming the role of ThunderClan leader after Firestar's sacrifice. The victory of the battle ensured that the Clans survived for moons after it.
Description[]
Delivering the prophecy[]

Solving the prophecy[]
- Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and the third cat, Dovewing, soon find the fourth to fulfill and solve the oldest prophecy written since the dawn of time itself, as Firestar is the fourth cat in the oldest prophecy.[10] The prophecy's true meaning is eventually revealed: to save the Clans from the “darkness that lasts forever”, the Dark Forest.[source?] Jayfeather, Lionblaze, and Dovewing, together with Firestar and the other Clans, are able to defeat the Dark forest, though Firestar dies, and many other lives are lost.[11]

The Three[]
- Jayfeather and Lionblaze are two of the cats in the prophecy. Jayfeather is able to walk in any cat's dreams,[12] and Lionblaze is unable to be hurt in battle.[13] The two brothers think that their sister, Hollyleaf, is the third cat of the prophecy,[13] but following her presumed death in Sunrise, it is revealed she wasn't part of the prophecy.[14] The third cat of the prophecy eventually turns out to be Dovewing.[15]

Finding the true third cat[]
- Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf all think she is the third cat and that her power just hasn’t shown itself yet, and will reveal itself soon,[13] but they realize it can't be her once she flees into the tunnels, and they turn their attention to Dovekit and Ivykit, Whitewing and Birchfall's kits.[14]. Yellowfang visits Dovepaw in a dream and tells the young she-cat, "After the sharp-eyed jay and the roaring lion, peace will come on dove's gentle wing."[4] The apprentice however, almost immediately forgets the dream.[16] Eventually, Dovepaw reveals her astounding hearing powers, able to hear miles away, and Jayfeather and Lionblaze know that she must be the true third cat.[17] She shows this new power by hearing strange brown animals miles away, that have been blocking the river with their dams.[18] When Lionblaze, Dovepaw and two cats from each of the other Clans travel to the beavers,[19] Lionblaze and Jayfeather can be certain that Dovepaw is the true third cat.[source?]

The fourth cat[]
- The original prophecy concerning the fourth cat was revealed in Sign of the Moon, where Jayfeather, who can see in his dreams, sees many of the ancient cats. He meets Cloud, mother of the present Stoneteller, who says, "The end of the stars draws near. Three must become four to battle the darkness that lasts forever." She leaves him by saying that the fourth is with them, and they don't need to search far.[20]
- Jayfeather meets the other medicine cats at the Moonpool. The other medicine cats talk, mentioning apprentices and herb stores. Jayfeather snaps at them and reveals the truth about the Dark Forest cats being the scents found in the Clans' territories, and the fact that they have been training Clan cats in their sleep. As the medicine cats grow slightly skeptical, Jayfeather further reveals that Brokenstar has threatened the worst possible punishments upon the cats so it is not clear which are traitors and which are allies. As the cats ask him what has to be done, and Kestrelflight reminds Willowshine that StarClan is divided, Jayfeather replies that they must reunite StarClan. He dips his nose in the Moonpool followed by the other medicine cats.[21]
- As StarClan surrounds them, Jayfeather's vision returns. Willowshine asks where the sun is, and Littlecloud asks Jayfeather what they should do now. The ThunderClan medicine cat responds by saying that they must bring all their ancestors back to where they are now. They acquiesce and begin to scatter.[21]
- After having collected all their ancestors, the medicine cats meet back up with most of StarClan. Jayfeather addresses them, and he reminds them that the Dark Forest is rising and they must meet the enemy head-on instead of hiding. Sunstar mentions the prophecy, but Bluestar interrupts the former ThunderClan leader saying there are now four cats instead of just three. Jayfeather tells the she-cat they still cannot find the fourth cat. Bluestar tells the oblivious medicine cat that he isn't the only cat with a prophecy and mentions a fire saving the Clan. Jayfeather's mind whirls as Bluestar tells him to find the cat.[21]
- Jayfeather walks into the fourth cat's dreams, and finds Firestar fighting in a battle over Sunningrocks in the old forest. Firestar freezes and stares at him as Jayfeather asks him to come with him as the prophecy needs more than three cats. Firestar questions him and Jayfeather impatiently responds saying that the Tribe of Endless Hunting had told him that one more cat was needed to fulfill the prophecy. Firestar's eyes begin to glow as he remembers his own prophecy and murmurs to himself that fire will save the Clan. Firestar follows the medicine cat to the area where StarClan awaits him. As they approach the starry cats, the medicine cat glances at his leader and mentions that they need him.[21]
- After showing the StarClan cats the dangers of the Dark Forest, Firestar, horrified, asks how they can defeat such evil. Firestar stands tall in front of Yellowfang and tells her they can trust in him and in each other. Firestar declares that the prophecy has been fulfilled and Jayfeather wakes up at the Moonpool.[21]
- Jayfeather and the remaining medicine cats tell each other they must gather their leaders and bring them to the island. Littlecloud, Kestrelflight, Willowshine, and Jayfeather promise to meet at sunhigh as they realize that uniting the Clans is the only way to defeat the Dark Forest.[21]
