"What did we really gain by moving to the lake? What kind of leader have I been?"
This article contains major spoilers for the recently released book, The Elders' Quest. Please proceed at your own discretion.
"Destiny isn't a path that any cat follows blindly. It is always a matter of choice, and sometimes the heart speaks loudest. Deep down, I always knew what I had to do, and that's why I came back to the Clan. Whatever else happens, I trust you to know the right thing to do as well. Listen to your heart, Lionblaze, because that's where your true destiny lies."
— Leafpool advising Lionblaze in Sign of the Moon, page 108

Leafpool is a small,[29] lithe,[30] pale[29] brown tabby she-cat[10] with amber eyes.[31] She has a white chest and paws.[32]

Leafpool was a ThunderClan medicine cat who served under Firestar's, Bramblestar's, Rowanstar's, and Leafstar's leaderships in the lake territories. She was born as Leafkit to Firestar and Sandstorm alongside her sister, Squirrelkit, and was apprenticed as a medicine cat apprentice to Cinderpelt as Leafpaw. Following the Great Journey, Leafpaw discovered the Moonpool and earned her full medicine cat name, Leafpool, which commemorated her finding the Moonpool. Soon after, she fell in love with Crowfeather, a WindClan warrior, although she had hated him before, and broke the warrior code to run away with him. However, after meeting Midnight, Leafpool and Crowfeather returned to the Clans and assisted in the battle against the badgers that resulted in Cinderpelt's death.

Unbeknownst to the Clan, Leafpool gave birth to Crowfeather's kits, Lionblaze, Jayfeather, and Hollyleaf, who were raised by Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight to protect her, though Squirrelflight was the only one who knew the truth. She initially mentored Hollypaw; however, Jaypaw became her apprentice after switching roles. After the secret was revealed by Hollyleaf, Leafpool stepped down from her position and became a warrior. After her kits forgave her, Leafpool returned as a medicine cat to assist during the Great Battle. Eventually, she mentored Puddleshine in ShadowClan and stayed in SkyClan when they had no medicine cat. Following the battle against the Sisters, Leafpool was gravely injured in a rockslide, and after her StarClan trial, she was ultimately accepted, remaining in StarClan after her death and reuniting with her kin.

What was Leafpool's relationship with Crowfeather? toggle section
Leafpaw first met Crowfeather when the Clans arrived at their new home by the lake. She assisted WindClan with their ill elders, and Crowfeather began to develop feelings for her. He saved her life when she nearly fell into ThunderClan's hollow, and the two began to meet in secret. Leafpool decided to run away with Crowfeather due to her self-perceived insignificance in ThunderClan. After Midnight warned them of impending danger to ThunderClan, she and Crowfeather returned to the Clans and broke off their relationship. She later gave birth to their kits, Hollyleaf, Jayfeather, and Lionblaze, with her sister Squirrelflight raising them so Leafpool could remain a medicine cat. Leafpool kept their kits a secret from Crowfeather, but Hollyleaf eventually revealed the truth at a Gathering where Crowfeather denounced his kits. He later came to accept them during the Great Battle, and Crowfeather and Leafpool never stopped loving each other. Crowfeather mourned for her death.

How did Leafpool discover the Moonpool? toggle section
Guided by StarClan, Leafpaw discovered the Moonpool, the sacred site of StarClan located upstream of the ThunderClan and WindClan stream border. This area is nestled at the base of a steep stone hollow, protected by thornbushes and moss-covered rocks. A cleft halfway up the cliff feeds water into a small pool that shines with starlight below. A path winds down to the Moonpool and is imprinted with paw prints of the Ancient cats who used to live by the lake. Leafpool's name commemorates her discovery of this significant location.

Why did Leafpool give up her kits? toggle section
Leafpool gave up her kits for her sister Squirrelflight to raise after being urged by StarClan, who told her that she must remain a medicine cat and that her kits will be vital for ThunderClan's survival in the future. The New Prophecy

"It's all right. I'll stay here and take good care of the Clan, I promise. One day we'll meet again, walking among the stars."
―Leafpool to Crowfeather Twilight, page 310
Leafpaw is a ThunderClan medicine cat apprentice training under Cinderpelt. She shares a strong connection with her sister, Squirrelpaw, and the littermates are able to sense what the other is feeling or thinking. This ability proved helpful on Squirrelpaw's journey to the sun-drown-place, when Leafpaw thinks of a herb needed to be used. Leafpaw befriends Mothwing, the new RiverClan medicine cat apprentice, and is trapped by Twolegs while looking for Brightheart and Cloudtail, and during this time, she befriends a kittypet named Cody. She escapes with the help of a rescue patrol led by Graystripe and Squirrelpaw.

Crowfeather being assigned to escort Leafpaw back to ThunderClan

She takes part on the Great Journey and, guided by Spottedleaf, discovers the Moonpool by the lake, earning her full name, Leafpool. Leafpool and Crowfeather fall in love and decide to flee the Clans to be together. After one night, they meet a badger, Midnight, who tells them that her kin is planning to attack ThunderClan. Leafpool realizes that she cannot abandon her Clan and her medicine cat duties, deciding to go back. Crowfeather is heartbroken by her decision to leave him and takes her home. Cinderpelt dies in the attack, and Leafpool pledges her loyalty to being a medicine cat.

Power of Three

"I know I cannot be ThunderClan's medicine cat any longer. I'm so very sorry to you, Firestar, and to all my Clanmates. Please know that I tried my best, and regretted what I had done with every single breath. But I couldn't regret having my kits. They are fine cats, and I will always be proud of them."
―Leafpool's confession at the Gathering Sunrise, pages 306-307
Brambleclaw and Squirrelflight become parents to Lionkit, Jaykit, and Hollykit, and Leafpool dotes on her new kin. At first, she trains Hollypaw, but soon realizes Jaypaw's gifted ability and takes him as her apprentice. After the Clan recovers from a deadly greencough outbreak, Leafpool gives Jaypaw his full name, Jayfeather. When the siblings learn that Squirrelflight and Brambleclaw are not their true parents, Jayfeather puts the pieces together that Leafpool is his mother, and Leafpool tells Hollyleaf the truth herself. Once Hollyleaf reveals the secret at a Gathering, Leafpool steps down to become a warrior. Hollyleaf orders her mother to eat deathberries as repentance, but Leafpool refuses, reasoning with her.

Omen of the Stars

"There's nothing to forgive. You did what you thought was best. No cat can blame you for that."
―Jayfeather to Leafpool The Last Hope, page 249
With Leafpool no longer a medicine cat, Jayfeather struggles to take care of the Clan by himself. Leafpool is not a very good hunter or fighter at first and spends time close to Squirrelflight, who is also shunned from the Clan. When Lionblaze and Breezepelt are fighting, she screeches to Crowfeather to stop them. While Jayfeather remains distant, Leafpool grows close to Lionblaze who seeks her advice about Cinderheart. She is overjoyed when Hollyleaf is revealed to be alive, and before the Great Battle, she assists Jayfeather with preparing herbs. The Clan agrees that she is a gifted medicine cat and should be given a second chance.

A Vision of Shadows

"You think it's that easy? I'm not training him to stalk birds. There's a lot to learn. And even then a medicine cat needs experience--more experience than you can get in a couple of moons."
―Leafpool to Rowanstar about training Puddlekit Thunder and Shadow, page 23
She and Jayfeather have a dream that Alderpaw's destiny is to become a medicine cat, and the two train the young tom. She becomes the ShadowClan medicine cat temporarily when Littlecloud dies without a successor, training Puddlepaw to fulfill the position. Leafpool later becomes SkyClan's temporary medicine cat until Frecklewish is found, allowing her to return to ThunderClan. After the fire in RiverClan's camp, she goes to help Mothwing and Willowshine cure the wounded cats in their Clan.

«Do I still have feelings for Leafpool? But then he thought of all that had happened in the seasons they'd been apart. They led separate lives now, and the idea of being together seemed even more impossible than it had seasons ago, when they'd tried to run away. He no longer felt an ache when he imagined Leafpool without him. Now he felt only admiration, and hope that she was happy.»

Leafpool gives him advice about how he should love all of his kits, including Lionblaze and Jayfeather.
"I don't regret having my kits. Only that I lied about being their mother. I wish I'd had more courage, but I thought I was doing the best for everyone by choosing to remain a medicine cat. […] But please don't turn Squirrelflight away. Everything she did was out of loyalty for me. I couldn't wish to have a better sister. […] If some cat must be punished for what we did, punish me, not her."
―Leafpool to the StarClan cats during her trial Squirrelflight's Hope, pages 347-348

Leafpool becomes pregnant with Crowfeather's kits and shares the secret with Squirrelflight, urging her to take care of them.
