Chapter description[]

Leopardkit stares at her surrounding denmates, suggesting that they should play hide-and-seek. Sedgekit exclaims that she will be the hunter, and every other kit starts hiding, while Leopardkit asks Shimmerpelt to make sure the seeker doesn't peek. Skykit states that the yellow tabby is cheating by asking Shimmerpelt for help, while Loudkit says that Sedgekit never cheats. Frogkit tells the others to hurry up, but Sunkit tells the gray kit that Leopardkit is making sure everything is fair. Frogkit complains that the dappled tabby talks too much, but pale gray kit sticks up for Leopardkit. The golden tabby kit is thankful for Sunkit, pointing out the fact that she isn't even her littermate. Leopardkit races off, trying to find a good hiding spot. Piketooth compliments her speed, while Ottersplash offers the RiverClan kit a spot to hide behind her and Lakeshine, the other RiverClan queen. Shimmerpelt tells Sedgekit that every kit has hidden, while Ottersplash and Lakeshine remind Leopardkit that Sedgekit is a really good hunter. Lakeshine declines that Leopardkit is behind her, but the golden tabby kit gives away her spot, sneezing. Sedgekit exclaims that the pair of queens had lied, while Leopardkit runs away saying that Sedgekit had to catch her. Unfortunately, Leopardkit runs into Crookedjaw, who manages to help the kit escape. While doing so, Leopardkit calls out Skykit's name so that Sedgekit will be distracted, causing Skykit to be outraged.
Teasing Leopardkit, Mudfur tells Crookedjaw about his huge tick on his shoulder, causing the kit to leap out at him, telling him that it is Leopardkit. Mudfur asks what his daughter is doing, so Leopardkit replies that her and the other kits were playing hide-and-seek and Crookedjaw helped her get away from the hunter. Mudfur tells Crookedjaw that he shouldn't help her next time, but Echomist states that the patrol would've came back a long time ago if light brown tom hadn't insisted on catching a carp for his daughter. Sedgekit calls to Leopardkit, telling her that since she has found everybody, Blackkit is being hunter next. Sunkit and Frogkit go to the elders' den, while Loudkit, Sedgekit, and Reedkit go to the other side of the clearing. Leopardkit ponders if Hailstar would mind if she used his den, or if Brambleberry would allow her to hide in the herb storage. Before she can make a decision, Skykit calls her over, telling her that she knows a great hiding spot. Leopardkit follows the older kit, who leads her into a puddle of shallow water. The golden tabby kit starts to caution the brown tabby, but before she finishes her sentence, Skykit plunges her head under the water. Leopardkit angrily confronts Skykit after the latter lets the former breathe, asking why she had done that. The brown tabby glares at her, stating that that was for telling Sedgekit where she was hiding. Skykit continues by saying that Leopardkit thinks she's so special, which is why Blackkit and herself don't like playing with the yellow tabby kit, telling her that they only play with her because Shimmerpelt makes them.
The young kit states that she's going to tell Shimmerpelt about that, but Skykit cuts her off, saying that the only reason she gets treated like she's special is because she killed Brightsky, her own mother. Continuing, Skykit states that the only reason Brightsky was sick was because of a rotten kit, implying that the kit was Leopardkit. The next day, Leopardkit declines Sunkit's invitation to play, citing that she is too tired to. She thinks over what Skykit had said the other day, and decides to go ask Mudfur if she was really the reason Brightsky died. Mudfur asks why Leopardkit wasn't playing with the other kits, and guesses that she is upset. The RiverClan kit asks if she had killed Brightsky, and after a moment of hesitation, Mudfur replies that Brightsky had caught a sickness that none of Brambleberry's herbs worked for. The light brown warrior continues, telling his daughter that StarClan saved her because she's special, and tells her about the dream he had received after Brightsky and her littermates died. In the dream, Brightsky came to him and told him to take good care of Leopardkit, as she would be essential to not only RiverClan, but to all the Clans. With newfound motivation, Leopardkit sets herself a goal of being the bravest warrior RiverClan has seen.
