"And yet—she realized, as she turned the conversation over in her mind—[Tigerclaw] hadn’t. He’d told her to put her Clan first. If we have our own thoughts and opinions, where’s the harm? That was true, wasn’t it? He was right. She truly believed that the Clans needed change. And she would be leader one day. What was wrong with admitting that, and thinking about it now?" |

Chapter description[]
- Leopardfur, having just checked on Mosspelt, reflects that she has not yet been able to speak with Crookedstar about taking back their territory. She checks around the camp and heads to the entrance, and Graypool and Silverstream tell her that Crookedstar is outside. She heads out to find him and sits beside him by the river, and she confronts him about their agreement with ShadowClan, expressing her concern that RiverClan will not have enough prey since ShadowClan scares it away. Crookedstar says that he does not want to risk their peace and points out that she cannot guarantee that RiverClan will triumph in a war, which may cause the other Clans to view them as weak.
- While Leopardfur is sorting patrols, Whiteclaw informs her that Nightpelt wants to see Crookedstar. Crookedstar takes Leopardfur to meet the ShadowClan leader, and when they arrive, Leopardfur thinks that she will not allow Nightpelt to demand more hunting rights. Nightpelt promises change and comments on hunger, saying that WindClan’s territory is free for hunting. He offers an alliance, and when Crookedstar warns him of ThunderClan, he dismisses it based on the proposed alliance. Crookedstar asks Leopardfur for her opinion, and she approves of the plan, as does he, though Nightpelt warns that hunting on the moor should wait until after the Gathering to check ThunderClan’s response. They agree to hide their alliance in the meantime. As they leave, Crookedstar comments to Leopardfur that a leader's patience pays off, but she wonders how that has affected their Clan.
- At the Gathering, Nightpelt announces his new leadership. Tigerclaw seems amused by Nightpelt not yet having his leader name, and Leopardfur is suspicious of him. Leopardfur wonders how best to organize hunting patrols for the moor, but her thoughts are disrupted by Bluestar’s declaration that WindClan needs to be brought back. Bluestar argues that they must have all four Clans, as StarClan intended. Leopardfur, furious that Crookedstar will not answer, challenges her, but Tigerclaw supports Bluestar. Bluestar asks Crookedstar why he needs more prey when RiverClan has plenty and appeals to Nightpelt with the reminder that ThunderClan helped exile Brokenstar. Nightpelt and Crookedstar relent, though Leopardfur wonders if they are pretending. Tigerclaw asks Leopardfur if she is learning from Bluestar, and is pleased when Leopardfur expresses her desire to keep her Clan fed. He tells her that they can have their own opinions so long as they remain loyal. He says that they can bring change as leaders and begins to suggest that they work together. She interrupts him and leaves, though she finds herself agreeing with his points, thinking that wanting change for RiverClan is not disloyal.
