Chapter description

Leopardfur sorts out the moor patrol, and she reflects on Mudfur and Crookedstar's words and what she has done to prove herself. She warns Graypool to chase away the WindClan stragglers if she sees them, and when Frogleap gives her a look, she sets him to work on the camp walls. Leopardfur then invites Whiteclaw to patrol with her and Silverstream, hoping that Whiteclaw will bond with his crush. She goes to visit Crookedstar with dread, but finds that he has recovered well, and she is frustrated that she can no longer control the Clan as she wants and prove herself as a leader. Crookedstar is unable to recall their previous conversation, but Leopardfur informs him of where she sent the patrols. To her agitation, he remains unwilling to hunt on WindClan territory.

Crookedstar asks her to send Silverstream to him so they can spend time together, and, feeling frustrated, she does so, to Whiteclaw's disappointment. Picking out Piketooth, Sedgecreek, Voleclaw, and Reedtail, she goes out on patrol with Whiteclaw. After they hunt for a while, Leopardfur decides to go to the gorge, reassuring her Clanmates that she will not allow them to fall. At the gorge, they find a patrol of ThunderClan and WindClan cats: Fireheart, Graystripe, Onewhisker, and Deadfoot. Leopardfur chooses to speak with them, but despite her warnings, Whiteclaw rushes into battle, attacking the rival cats.

As she chases after Whiteclaw, Leopardfur realizes that WindClan has returned. Sedgecreek attacks Onewhisker, and Leopardfur saves her from falling into the gorge. Leopardfur aids Reedtail against Graystripe, feeling satisfied when she thinks that the intruders have been taught their lesson. Just as she is about to let them escape, a second ThunderClan patrol arrives, led by Tigerclaw. Voleclaw flees, defeated by Tigerclaw, and Leopardfur is attacked by Willowpelt, and she realizes that RiverClan is in danger. She fends off Willowpelt and then takes Deadfoot, but as she gets him in a vulnerable position, Tigerclaw pulls her off and tells her that he is ready to protect his Clan against her, even though he admires her. She fights him and manages to push him onto his side, but she then hears a shriek. She hurries to Graystripe's side in time to see Whiteclaw vanish beneath the water in the gorge.
