"There is truth in what you say. But Whiteclaw’s death has shown me what happens when a warrior reacts with instinct and not reason. [...] I may never be as tolerant as Crookedstar, but I never want to feel this way again. I never want to have to ask myself again if I’m the reason one of my Clanmates died." |

Chapter description[]
- Leopardfur awakens in the medicine den, recalling her shock and grief over Whiteclaw's death. Mudfur says that she needs rest from her grief; she falls back asleep and dreams of a grieving Sunfish, who asks her how she could have allowed Whiteclaw to die after promising to protect him. Voleclaw wakes her, telling her that the Clan needs her to sort the patrols. Still mourning, Leopardfur returns to sleep and wakes again to find Frogleap with her. He offers her water and tells her that she has been in Mudfur's den for five days. Leopardfur thinks that he hates her, but he assures her that she has done nothing wrong. She expresses her regret over choosing her deputy position over him, and he reminds her that he loves Mosspelt now, but promises that he is her friend.
- Once Leopardfur eats a trout that Frogleap gives her, Silverstream visits her and expresses guilt for staying with Crookedstar. Leopardfur points out that the patrol had been at a disadvantage, and she could not have changed the outcome. She accuses Graystripe of killing Whiteclaw, but Silverstream argues that Graystripe saved him, seeming cold. Thinking that Silverstream must be grieving, Leopardfur ponders telling her how Whiteclaw had felt, but decides against it. Mudfur sends Silverstream away, and Leopardfur thanks him for caring for her. She confides in Mudfur, believing that her aggressiveness had influenced Whiteclaw, leading to his death. Mudfur points out that other warriors would have done the same, and she expresses doubt in herself. When she reveals that she knows that he told Crookedstar not to make her deputy, Mudfur clarifies that he fears that she will choose war over peace when she is leader but believes that she can be a good leader. Leopardfur says that her experiences have taught her the value of reason over instinct, which pleases her father, and she decides to devote herself to becoming a better deputy.
