"Good. Then the alliance stands. But it shouldn't simply be a defensive treaty. I'm certain that ThunderClan and WindClan are looking for an excuse to attack us. And I think we should make the first move." |

Chapter description[]
- Leopardfur thinks about how leaf-bare has settled in and brought illness to the Clan, sending Sedgecreek, Shadepelt, and Mallowtail to the medicine den. Mudfur informs her that Tanglewhisker has also fallen ill, and he cannot cure the sick. She asks if they need prey or herbs, but he says that they do not and leaves to tend to the sick cats. Blackclaw calls to Leopardfur and reports ThunderClan scent, and she tells them to gather evidence rather than fighting right away.
- At the Gathering, WindClan is present for the first time since being driven out. Crookedstar tells Leopardfur to let him speak about the ThunderClan scent. When he leaves, Tigerclaw questions her obedience, and Leopardfur wonders about his intentions. She refuses to tell him anything, asserting her support for Crookedstar, but is alarmed when he says that he is going to say something that might cause trouble. Bluestar accuses RiverClan of trespassing, and when Crookedstar responds by accusing ThunderClan of the same, Leopardfur notices Fireheart looking at Graystripe. Tigerclaw chimes in and accuses ShadowClan of trespassing as well, as does Tallstar. Tigerclaw declares that ShadowClan and RiverClan have united, causing the leaders to argue. When clouds cover the moon, the Gathering breaks up, and Leopardfur wonders what Tigerclaw was trying to do.
- Nightstar arrives at the RiverClan camp, and Skyheart warns Leopardfur. Leopardfur joins him and Crookedstar, and Nightstar says that he wishes to ensure that they are still allies. The two leaders agree that ThunderClan has gained WindClan's support to attack ShadowClan and RiverClan, but Leopardfur, knowing that Tigerclaw has deliberately caused upset, warns against provoking ThunderClan. Nightstar tells them about a dream that Runningnose has had, and Crookedstar decides that they should attack first.
