Chapter description[]
- Leopardfur, having kept Silverstream from patrols, invites her out to hunt. She takes her to the water meadow while they briefly discuss Tanglewhisker's death. As they hunt, Leopardfur tells Silverstream about loving Frogleap and how responsibilities interfered, and Silverstream remarks that becoming deputy had been more important to Leopardfur than Frogleap. This irritates Leopardfur, who argues that she cares about the Clan, and Silverstream asks if Leopardfur believes her to be dangerous to the Clan.
- Leopardfur reveals that she knows about Graystripe, and Silverstream argues that she is causing no harm by being with him. Despite Leopardfur's arguments, Silverstream remains unconvinced and insists that she loves Graystripe and will not give him up. When Leopardfur says that leaving RiverClan is the only way to be with him, Silverstream says that she may join ThunderClan, and Leopardfur accuses her of betraying her Clan. Silverstream asks if she will tell, and Leopardfur, wanting to protect her, says that she will not, but demands that she stop seeing Graystripe. Silverstream refuses and begs her not to tell Crookedstar so that she can figure it out on her own. Leopardfur wishes to protect her, but thinks that she will try to stop her.
- Settling down days later, Leopardfur frets over Silverstream and thinks about how the river is rising, making it harder to find river prey. She is startled awake by wails of pain, and she and Reedtail leave the warriors' den to investigate. They find several of their Clanmates sick, and Mudfur says that they are poisoned and sends Sedgecreek to gather mallow. When she asks her Clanmates what they ate, she realizes that they have been poisoned by the fish from the river.
