Chapter description

Leopardfur thinks about how the Clan is recovering from the illness and poisoning despite Birdsong's death, and she struggles through the rising river with her patrol on the way to figure out the source of the poison. She believes that ThunderClan is responsible, and when Stonefur mentions Onewhisker bringing ThunderClan to the battle, she briefly considers Tigerclaw. She is convinced, however, that Graystripe is behind the poisoning. Her patrol splits up to search, but none of them can find anything. They return to camp, with Leopardfur hoping that she can split Silverstream and Graystripe up by proving that ThunderClan has poisoned the river. At camp, Leopardfur shares her suspicions with Crookedstar, who believes her and thinks that they can destroy ThunderClan's alliance with WindClan.

When Leopardfur leaves Crookedstar's den, Silverstream confronts her, knowing that the deputy suspects ThunderClan and, in particular, Graystripe. Leopardfur says that Silverstream needs to stay away if Graystripe is involved, but Silverstream defends him, causing Leopardfur to silently question her loyalty. On the next patrol to investigate the poisoning, Leopardfur includes Silverstream, hoping to prove to her that Graystripe is untrustworthy. As the patrol splits up, Silverstream tells Leopardfur that she will prove that Graystripe is innocent, and Leopardfur follows her to make sure she does not hide evidence. Eventually, Leopardfur detects a foul stench and finds Twoleg trash stuck in the river—the source of the poison. Frustrated that Graystripe is innocent, Leopardfur thinks that she needs to end his relationship with Silverstream another way.
