Chapter description[]
- Waking up, Leopardfur remembers being unable to get rid of the Twoleg trash. She leaves the warriors' den and checks the fresh-kill pile, and Mudfur asks if she is hungry. She offers to take the last piece of prey to the queens, but he tells her to let them rest. He suggests that she fish upstream, but she thinks it is too dangerous due to the weather. Frogleap breaks in and argues, saying that he wants his kits to have fish rather than land prey. Leopardfur agrees and takes a patrol out to hunt, and despite her misgivings, the cats swim in the river, with Skyheart catching a chub.
- Wanting to catch a carp for his kits, Frogleap dives underwater; when he does not resurface, Leopardfur panics until he does. Frogleap catches sight of a trout, and with Leopardfur's help, he catches it. After some time, the patrol catches a large pile of fish, but Frogleap insists that he catch a carp. Despite Leopardfur's protests, he continues searching until he catches one. Leopardfur then sees a tree branch approaching Frogleap in the water, and she is unable to reach him in time, watching as the branch collides with him and the river sweeps him away. Unable to catch him and in danger of being struck by branch pieces, Leopardfur heads for shore and grieves while Skyheart comforts her.
