Chapter description

Leopardfur notes that the camp is nearly rebuilt, and she sees the kits playing, with Dawnkit reluctant to join. She wonders if she should speak to Mosspelt about allowing her kit to play, but Dawnkit manages to sneak out. Leopardfur detects WindClan scent as Tallstar and Stagleap arrive and sends for Crookedstar, sensing that Tallstar has a complaint to share. When Crookedstar reaches them, Tallstar says that RiverClan scent has been found on WindClan territory with prey blood, and Crookedstar and Leopardfur deny sending patrols. Tallstar implies that RiverClan still wants WindClan's land, but Leopardfur defends her Clanmates, and Tallstar is angered by their refusal to punish the trespassers.

Just as Tallstar demands repayment through prey, Mistyfoot enters camp and tells Crookedstar that Silverstream has died. Tallstar respectfully leaves, and Mistyfoot explains that Silverstream died giving birth to Graystripe's kits, the kits are being nursed by a ThunderClan queen, and Silverstream was buried at Sunningrocks. Leopardfur is infuriated by Silverstream's burial and says that the kits should be with RiverClan. Crookedstar shuts down Reedtail's protests and decides to hold a vigil at the burial site. Leopardfur feels guilty for Silverstream's death and silently promises to protect her Clanmates and take the kits back.

Days later, as the sun sets, Leopardfur reflects on her grief, the Clan's arguments over the kits, and their attempts to persuade Bluestar to give them up. She and Mistyfoot leave camp with Crookedstar to retrieve the kits, and they find Graystripe waiting by the river with his kits. Mistyfoot and Graystripe bring the kits over, and Graystripe requests to join RiverClan to be with his kits. Leopardfur is angered by this, but Crookedstar asks Graystripe to promise to serve RiverClan, and he agrees. Leopardfur accuses him of killing Whiteclaw and being dangerous, but Crookedstar accepts him, sensing Graystripe's love for and loyalty to Silverstream and their kits.
