"[...] It was a debt she would not forget. RiverClan had been generous to the Clan that had stolen Sunningrocks and caused the deaths of Whiteclaw, Sunfish, Whitefang, and Silverstream. And yet she suspected that only she and StarClan truly realized how much ThunderClan owed them. One day, RiverClan would ask for something in return, and when they did, she hoped that ThunderClan would be prepared to honor Bluestar's promise." |

Chapter description[]
- As the RiverClan cats return from the Gathering, they discuss what happened to Tigerclaw, who has left ThunderClan. Leopardfur recalls her previous interactions with him and wonders who she will lead beside now that he is gone, and she resents Fireheart's rise to the deputy position, remaining suspicious of the former kittypet. Later, as her patrol is returning from hunting, they find Graystripe's patrol injured, and they report that rogues have once again attacked ThunderClan, accompanied by Tigerclaw. Leopardfur suspects Graystripe of hiding information about Tigerclaw, but Graystripe insists that he does not know anything, confusing her.
- Leopardfur awakens to Loudbelly's call and the smell of smoke, and she discovers that a fire has started in ThunderClan's territory. Graystripe begs that they help, and Crookedstar orders Leopardfur to take a patrol to aid ThunderClan. At the river, the RiverClan patrol begins helping the ThunderClan cats across. Leopardfur helps Fireheart pull an elder onto shore, and then swims across the river to retrieve Patchpelt's body. She tells Fireheart that Patchpelt can be buried at RiverClan camp and has Mudfur tend to Bluestar with Cinderpelt. Once ThunderClan is ready, she takes them back to camp. Bluestar is too dazed to speak, and Fireheart appeals to Crookedstar for help, to which Crookedstar allows them to stay. Leopardfur offers to bury Patchpelt, but to her ire, Fireheart insists that ThunderClan should bury him, reminding her of how Graystripe buried Silverstream instead of RiverClan. She watches Graystripe with his former Clanmates and wonders about his loyalty.
- The following day, Crookedstar takes Leopardfur to speak with Bluestar, who thanks him and says that she will send a patrol to check the fire. She speaks to Graystripe like a Clanmate, seemingly forgetting that he left ThunderClan, and he asks Crookedstar for permission to go with the patrol. Leopardfur thinks it is a bad idea to let Graystripe and Fireheart go alone together, but stays behind. When they return and report that ThunderClan can go home, Bluestar comments that ThunderClan is indebted to RiverClan, and Leopardfur thinks that she will take advantage of Bluestar's promise in return for the deaths of several RiverClan cats.
