Chapter description

At the Gathering, Leopardfur greets Deadfoot, who is agitated that the RiverClan warriors who stole WindClan prey have not been punished. Leopardfur notices that Fireheart is leading ThunderClan in Bluestar's place and tries to confront Cinderpelt, but she only says that Bluestar is recovering from breathing in smoke. ShadowClan arrives and Leopardfur realizes that Tigerclaw is leading them, and she also finds Blackfoot sitting with the deputies. Tigerclaw announces that Nightstar has died and that he is now the leader of ShadowClan, Tigerstar. While Fireheart reports on Bluestar's condition, Leopardfur wonders how it would feel to be a leader.

The next day, Leopardfur tries to speak to Crookedstar, but he is unwell. When she leaves Crookedstar's den, Tigerstar arrives and speaks with her. He reports that ShadowClan has recovered from the sickness and assures her that ShadowClan is allied to RiverClan. He reminds her of the need for change for the sake of their Clans' future. They agree that Clans must be sure of their strength, and Leopardfur is relieved with their openness with one another. Tigerstar warns her about Fireheart, telling her that his ambition had caused Tigerstar to leave ThunderClan. Leopardfur remarks that Fireheart does not understand honor, and Tigerstar warns her of Graystripe's disloyalty, implying that he is helping Fireheart to achieve his ambitions. He tells her that they cannot achieve their goals with Fireheart and Graystripe in control. He decides to leave to see Tallstar, reassuring Leopardfur again that ShadowClan will support RiverClan. As Leopardfur rushes to warn Crookedstar, Graystripe tries to tell her that she cannot trust Tigerstar, but she questions whether he himself can be trusted.
