- Leopardfur recalls her conversation with Crookedstar regarding Tigerstar's warning and how he had not seemed to entirely believe her. Crookedstar had questioned Tigerstar's involvement with the rogues who had attacked ThunderClan and cautioned Leopardfur about Tigerclaw's intentions, but Leopardfur had dismissed his concerns, believing that his sickness is to blame. Mudfur had warned that Crookedstar likely would not recover. In the present, Mudfur tells Leopardfur that Crookedstar wants to see her and that he has lost a life. Crookedstar asks if Leopardfur is prepared to lead her Clan and tells her that she will need to work hard. He longs for Willowbreeze and Silverstream, and when Leopardfur expresses guilt over Silverstream's death, he reassures her.
- Crookedstar falls into a coughing fit, and Mudfur takes Leopardfur outside and sympathizes with her grief. She questions her readiness for leadership, though Mudfur suggests that deputies who are unsure of themselves may be better off. He expresses pride in her and says that he hopes the Clans will find peace in the future, rather than fighting. He enters Crookedstar's den again and calls her, as Crookedstar is dying. Crookedstar tells Leopardfur that the Clans must take care of each other as much as themselves in times of danger and tries to warn her to be wary of cats like Tigerstar. Leopardfur promises to care for RiverClan, thinking that Crookedstar is wrong, and the RiverClan leader dies. She leaves the den and calls a Clan meeting, announcing Crookedstar's death and passing on his message, though she twists it to refer to RiverClan protecting themselves rather than the other Clans.
