Chapter description

Leopardstar lashes her tail in the midst of battle, determined to prove that a tiny ThunderClan patrol could not take over Sunningrocks. She feels the wounds Bluestar left on her flank and decides that she will not let the ThunderClan leader get away with it. She sees that Mistyfoot and Stonefur have cornered Bluestar, but the two warriors do not attack the ThunderClan leader. Leopardstar then sees Fireheart talking to them, and the siblings stop cornering Bluestar. Leopardstar cannot make out any words between them, but she is angry that Mistyfoot and Stonefur are listening to a kittypet. She hurls herself at Fireheart, but Graystripe tells the flame-colored tom to watch out. Leopardstar is enraged at his betrayal, and easily pins the ThunderClan warrior. However, just as she is about to lunge, Graystripe tears her away from Fireheart. Leopardstar growls that she heard him warn Fireheart and thinks that she was right about him being a spy. The tom apologizes but says that Fireheart is his friend. She hisses that he was never loyal to RiverClan and tells him to either attack his friend or leave the Clan. Graystripe decides that he cannot attack Fireheart, but Blackclaw then says that ThunderClan has sent reinforcements. Leopardstar yowls for RiverClan to retreat, and glares at the ThunderClan cats and adds that Graystripe is a traitor.

When Leopardstar returns to the camp, Mudfur notes that she is injured, but she snaps that she is fine. She goes to Mistyfoot and Stonefur, and furiously asks what Fireheart told them. Stonefur replies that Bluestar was confused, and Fireheart told them it would be dishonorable to hurt her. Mistyfoot adds that the leader did not seem to know who was attacking, but Leopardstar growls that the two warriors will be doing double patrols for a moon. She concedes that killing Bluestar would have been wrong, and asks why they did not defend their own leader from Graystripe. Stonefur and Mistyfoot apologize and reply that they did not think Graystripe would actually attack. Leopardstar thinks to herself that she was too tolerant to the dark gray tom, as she should have exiled him when Crookedstar died.

Later, Leopardstar leads a patrol to the river but sees that the water is frozen. Blackclaw and Sedgecreek are dismayed, and Leopardstar mews that RiverClan will have to cross borders if necessary. Blackclaw is anxious, and Leopardstar growls that they must do what they have to. When they return to the camp, she worries that the river may not thaw all leaf-bare. Primrosekit, Pikekit, Featherkit, and Stormkit are chasing each other, and Leopardstar purrs, thinking that the kits are not worried about issues like hunger or battles. Featherkit and Stormkit mew that it is their turn to be RiverClan, and Primrosekit and Pikekit can be ThunderClan. However, Primrosekit says that they have to be ThunderClan, as they are too weak to win. Stormkit frowns and says that ThunderClan wins all the time in real life. Leopardstar is enraged and thinks that those are clearly Graystripe's words. Just then, Stonefur mews that Tigerstar is at the entrance.
