Chapter description

Leopardstar waits for Tigerstar, thinking about how well the cross-border patrols have gone. She starts to wonder why borders even matter if there is prey for everyone. She begins to see how Tigerstar uniting the Clans is wise, and she and the ShadowClan leader share similar views of a singular Clan. However, Leopardstar then sees Skyheart refuse a mouse. She asks the queen if she is ill, and Skyheart answers that she just does not like it. When Leopardstar mews that she will get used to it, Skyheart answers that the prey was stolen. Leopardstar snaps that she should be grateful for her food and adds that she must make sure her kits are strong. Just then, Tigerstar enters, and the ShadowClan leader orders Skyheart to eat. The queen refuses, and Leopardstar realizes that she must back Tigerstar up. Skyheart slowly eats, and Leopardstar is uncomfortable, but knows that it is good for Skyheart. Tigerstar tells Leopardstar to keep Skyheart from prey for a few days, and orders RiverClan to save their prey bones. Leopardstar leads Tigerstar out of camp, wanting to talk to the dark brown tom.

Leopardstar tells Tigerstar that she has taken his advice and expanded patrols. Tigerstar remarks that he smelled ThunderClan prey, and Leopardstar mews that she now sees that borders only cause trouble and fewer Clans means more for all. Tigerstar is satisfied, and she thinks about how Stonefur does know about the plan. The two leaders agree that they will be equals, and Tigerstar goes on to say that life will improve for everyone. Leopardstar is excited, and Tigerstar states that they will be TigerClan. The ShadowClan leader bounds away, and Mudfur pads into view. The tom darkly asks her if she knows what she is doing. Leopardstar replies that it will make both Clans stronger, and he grunts that everything Tigerstar says must be true. Leopardstar angrily answers that it will save the Clan, but Mudfur disagrees. Leopardstar asks why he doubts her, and Mudfur says that he once believed that she would save the Clan, but then trails off. She wonders if Mudfur no longer believes in her and growls that she is leader. He sadly replies that he must speak the truth of what StarClan tells him, and the medicine cat walks away.

Later, Leopardstar gathers the Clan for a meeting. Her conversation with Mudfur still haunts her, and she watches the medicine cat join the rest of RiverClan. Leopardstar announces that Mudfur must leave for a while and continues that they have lost many cats to greencough, but there are rumors of an herb that can cure the disease. The Clan is happy, and Cedarpelt asks if Mudfur will travel alone. Leopardstar did not tell her father about this, and she mews that he will go alone, as they cannot spare any warriors with scarce prey. She adds that the herb is most potent in leaf-bare, and Mudfur does not say anything, even though Leopardstar thinks that he knows it is a lie. Leopardstar adds to herself that she and Tigerstar will change the Clans, and she does not want Mudfur in the way.
