"Fear. Your Clanmates will do anything I tell them because, if they don't, they know what will happen to them. And I will start by imprisoning their half-Clan friends. And when they see you sit back and watch without lifting a paw, there won't be a whisker of doubt about who's really in charge here."

Chapter description[]

Jaggedtooth and Boulder have been left in the RiverClan camp for support. Most of the RiverClan cats are uncertain about their presence but no longer protest the alliance with ShadowClan. Tigerstar arrives and leads Leopardstar away, snapping at Stonefur when he offers to join them. He asks her if she intends to let Stonefur and Mistyfoot mentor Featherkit and Stormkit, believing that they are untrustworthy. Tigerstar shows her a mound of prey bones called the Bonehill, which will serve as the new meeting place for TigerClan. He believes that they must attack WindClan and ThunderClan before their rivals can, saying that Firestar will not share leadership and is likely conspiring with Tallstar. Leopardstar suggests attacking both at once so that the survivors will be forced to join TigerClan, and that they can try to convince a few of their warriors to help. Tigerstar, impressed, comments on her lack of a mate and wistfully remarks on their timing, making Leopardstar think that she could have had a future with him as his mate.
Later, Stonefur asks if he should warn the other medicine cats that Mudfur will not be joining them, but Leopardstar says to wait for his return. When he insists on their need for a medicine cat, she claims that Runningnose is enough, as they are joined with ShadowClan now. Tigerstar arrives again, leading Blackfoot and a black tom, whom he introduces as Scourge. Scourge and Tigerstar mock Featherpaw and Stormpaw, and Stonefur and Mistyfoot defend their apprentices. Tigerstar says that half-Clan cats are untrustworthy to all Clans and accuses them of being spies. He grows agitated when the RiverClan warriors fail to use their new Clan name, and Cedarpelt asks Leopardstar who they are supposed to follow.
Embarrassed, Leopardstar pulls Tigerstar aside with Blackfoot and Scourge and confronts him. He argues with her about the half-Clan cats, and when Stonefur interrupts, Tigerstar snarls that he is fortunate to still be alive. Stonefur refuses to leave, citing his deputyship, but Tigerstar reveals that he only considers Blackfoot to be deputy. Leopardstar sends Stonefur away and Tigerstar presses on, saying that Stonefur could be working with Firestar. Leopardstar suggests exiling the half-Clan cats, thinking that they would be protected, but Tigerstar reveals his intention to kill them. He points out that her Clanmates do not support her and tells her that he will show them who is in charge through fear. Leopardstar is bewildered by his threats, having believed that he cared for her.
Leopardstar dreams of Mudfur giving her trout, before a hawk dives upon them. She startles awake, only for Skyheart to tell her that every cat has gone to the Bonehill with Darkstripe and Blackfoot. Leopardstar rushes to the Bonehill to find Stonefur, Mistyfoot, Stormpaw, and Featherpaw being dragged from their prison. Mistyfoot asks Stonefur to fight, but he will not risk the apprentices. Determined that exile is the best answer, Leopardstar joins Tigerstar as he begins a trial, reminding the cats of how Bluestar and Graystripe broke the warrior code. As he speaks, Leopardstar realizes that the prisoners have been starved. Stonefur challenges Tigerstar, who scolds Leopardstar for choosing him as deputy. He orders Stonefur to kill the apprentices to prove his loyalty, a demand that horrifies Leopardstar; however, when Stonefur defers to her, she supports the order. Stonefur refuses and Tigerstar orders Darkstripe to kill him, but when Darkstripe struggles, Blackfoot is sent in to finish Stonefur off. As TigerClan leaves, Leopardstar despairs over her decisions that have led to this.
