Chapter description

Leopardstar is aware that Mudfur has returned, but is unwilling to face him, afraid of what he will say to her. Timberfur sorts patrols in Stonefur's place, but when he says that they are not ready to fight in the case of a border patrol, Tigerstar snaps, causing Leopardstar to rise from her nest. He asks if she posted guards for the prisoners, who have escaped, and he declares that they are going to attack WindClan. When Leopardstar argues, he threatens her with his warriors. She points out that RiverClan is mourning Stonefur, but he believes that he saved them from her decisions and says that he will make all of the decisions, with Darkstripe and Blackfoot supporting him.

Leading her Clan to the WindClan border, Leopardstar notes their depression. She tells them to participate in the battle as little as possible, though they still seem upset about the upcoming fight. She approaches Tigerstar, who says that the battle must end before ThunderClan arrives to help. As they attack, true to Leopardstar's orders, RiverClan hangs back, though she rushes into the fight to convince Tigerstar. She soon finds herself surrounded by attacking warriors. The battle settles with WindClan battered, and Tigerstar holds Gorsepaw hostage. In spite of Tallstar's pleas and to Leopardstar's horror, Tigerstar kills the apprentice, and he orders Tallstar to tell Firestar to meet him at Fourtrees with his decision about whether or not to join TigerClan.

Mortified by Tigerstar's joy on the way home, Leopardstar takes her warriors back to the RiverClan camp. She reports his ultimatum for Firestar and says that RiverClan will attend the meeting. Mudfur appears disappointed in her as he tends to their injuries, and she decides to speak with him. In the medicine den, Sedgecreek and Vixenleap are friendly to her, and Mudfur sends them away. Leopardstar apologizes for not listening to him, but he reminds her that she had been born to save her Clan and says that he still believes it. She despairs over her choices, but he says that she needs to help the Clans. Leopardstar realizes that WindClan and ThunderClan can be her allies rather than her enemies and decides to turn on Tigerstar at the meeting.
