"I'm sorry. I was wrong to make RiverClan part of TigerClan. I should have seen that Tigerstar was greedy only for power. As soon as I saw he was a threat, I should have stood up to him. I should have protected you. It's my fault Stonefur died. I will never forgive myself. I don't know now how I could have doubted him, I don't know how I doubted any of my Clanmates, no matter their blood. None of you ever showed disloyalty. You loved RiverClan as much as I did. But I changed RiverClan into something no warrior could love. Now I'm going to change it back. I'm going to rebuilt it."

Chapter description[]

Leopardstar waits at the edge of Sunningrocks, thinking over her newly formed alliance with LionClan to defeat BloodClan. She also notes that Firestar had allowed her to sit by the often fought-over territory. The leader wonders if RiverClan would ever own Sunningrocks again, or if everything would be lost to the Twolegplace Clan. Leopardstar forces herself to believe that one day they would indeed reclaim Sunningrocks, just as the surrounding brambles move, alerting her to an approaching cat. Mistyfoot appears, and the mere sight of the she-cat hurts Leopardstar as she is reminded of Stonefur.
The leader thanks her for her time, as they begin talking about the looming battle. Mistyfoot points out that Tigerstar would not have agreed to support Firestar, to which Leopardstar argues he's dead and that TigerClan is no more. Mistyfoot questions why there are still ShadowClan cats there, and Leopardstar explains they are being given refuge as they were victims of Tigerstar. Mistyfoot challenges the leader's labeling of victims, wondering if she, Stonefur, and their apprentices were also seen as victims when they were imprisoned. Leopardstar doesn't acknowledge the statement and instead asks about Featherpaw and Stormpaw.
Mistyfoot explains they are well and have ThunderClan mentors now. The leader asks if that means they aren't returning to RiverClan, to which Mistyfoot asks in return if she was surprised. Leopardstar states they are RiverClan cats, which has Mistyfoot remark bitterly that that thought came a quarter moon too late. The RiverClan leader notices sadness in the other she-cat's eyes, wondering if she was thinking of her brother. This prompts her to apologize for what she had done, by aligning RiverClan with Tigerstar and that she blames herself for Stonefur's unneeded death.
Leopardstar states she wants to fix RiverClan, which has Mistyfoot question what it means to herself, or the young apprentices as they now had ThunderClan. Leopardstar asks her if she would be RiverClan's deputy if they survive the battle the following day. Mistyfoot points out key factors in her decision, but decides to not immediately answer the question. She decides to leave, which has Leopardstar telling the other that she hopes that one day she can be forgiven for what had transpired between them. The two leave, but just before Leopardstar leaves Sunningrocks, Mistyfoot returns and accepts the offer, not being able to be away from her true Clan. The blue gray she-cat states that first however, they must win the fight against BloodClan.

Characters[]

Major[]

Mentioned[]

Important events[]

  • Mistyfoot is offered RiverClan's deputyship to help rebuild RiverClan.[3]

Errors[]

  • Mistyfoot says Featherpaw and Stormpaw have gotten new mentors now that they live in ThunderClan[2] and while this is true for Stormpaw, Featherpaw's mentor hasn't changed as Mistyfoot continued to train her.[4] This is fixed in the paperback edition, where she says that only Stormpaw has a new mentor.[5]
