"When she'd been a naive kit, she had believed she would save her Clan easily, because of the potential her father had seen in her. Now she realized that she might "save" her Clan only after nearly destroying it. She had been foolish and greedy; she had aligned herself with an evil cat who'd told her only what she wanted to hear. She had caused her Clanmates great pain and even lost some of them forever. But now she recognized what was most important to her: not making RiverClan all-powerful, but ensuring that the Clan she'd been born into would live on forever. That was how she would save RiverClan."

Chapter description[]

Leopardstar pauses at the river to ensure the ShadowClan warriors cross it safely. She recognizes the fight ahead of them would be the last time ShadowClan and RiverClan would fight together. She adds that if the Clans win, Blackfoot would return to the pine forest, but in the event of them losing, more battles would likely ensue. Leopardstar watches as her warriors pace the river's shores just as the pale dawn light begins to color the sky. Blackfoot leads his patrol to shore and Leopardstar takes note of how well-fed the two Clans looked and that they would prove their loyalty in the looming fight. The golden she-cat addresses the gathered Clans, apologizing for her lack of leadership and succumbing to Tigerstar's schemes. She tells them that her failure won't leave her, knowing the pain it has caused them. Leopardstar then turns to Blackfoot, stating that both ShadowClan and RiverClan will survive and rebuild, becoming strong once again.
Her parting words to the cats gathered are meant to inspire them to fight bravely against Scourge and BloodClan, for if they do, they will win the fight. Leopardstar looks on proudly as the gathered warriors cheer in approval. She has a realization that her ideal Clan had been the RiverClan she'd grown up in and that in reality it never needed saving, she had only needed to see its honest value. The she-cat notices Mudfur's attention shift, and she sees Firestar outlined by the early dawn light, his fur seemingly alight like flame. The dappled leader looks back at her warriors, asking if they're ready to fight and with a chorus of replies, they head up the slope to join the ThunderClan tom. Standing there with her warriors and ThunderClan, Mudfur calls out to his daughter. He tells her the fight is her destiny and to save RiverClan, and she promises that she will. Leopardstar looks back on what she had thought saving RiverClan would be, and how naive and foolish some decisions were. As she rushes into the impending fight, she feels certain she would save the Clans, and by extent, RiverClan.
