Chapter description[]
- After checking the camp wall, Leopardfur sends Whitepaw to replace Birdsong and Tanglewhisker’s bedding and teach Emberkit and Mosskit apprentice duties, distracting him. Leopardfur broods over Oakheart’s refusal to take her on the Sunningrocks patrol and goes to confide in Mudfur, having not seen her father in some time. She briefly informs him about Whitepaw’s training progress, then talks about Oakheart’s patrol, expressing her confusion over Oakheart’s refusal to take her. Mudfur points out that other warriors can fight as well, and that revenge against ThunderClan will not help her grief. She complains that life without battle is ordinary and that the other Clans are a threat, and when Mudfur responds sarcastically, she leaves in frustration.
- Skyheart offers for Leopardfur to join her and Blackclaw to fish, but she refuses. Observing her Clanmates, Leopardfur wonders about the Sunningrocks patrol and thinks about Frogleap as a potential mate. She then hears a cat shrieking in pain and the camp stands alert; she rushes out, thinking it may be Whitepaw, but he meets her at the entrance. When she hears it again, she runs to the river. She finds Skyheart and Blackclaw struggling against a pike that is trying to drag Blackclaw underwater, and she attacks it. The fish struggles against her, smacking her away, and she sees Whitepaw joining the fray, wrapping his legs around the pike. The pike finally releases Blackclaw and fights against Leopardfur, flipping her underwater, where she sees a larger pike approaching. The larger pike kills the smaller one as Whitepaw pulls Leopardfur out of the water, and the cats guide Blackclaw back to camp.
- While the others take Blackclaw to the medicine den, Leopardfur and Whitepaw report to Crookedstar, and Skyheart tells them that Blackclaw’s wounds will heal, praising Leopardfur for saving him. Leopardfur points out Whitepaw’s bravery, and Crookedstar commends them both and promises to warn the Clan. Leopardfur checks on Whitepaw but sees that he is staring at the entrance. Oakheart’s patrol returns, with Mistyfoot and Loudbelly carrying his body. Mistyfoot says that he was killed by a rockfall during a battle with ThunderClan, and Crookedstar mourns his brother’s death. Leopardfur waits anxiously for Frogleap and greets him with relief when he returns, and Mudfur calls her to help bring Loudbelly into his den and tend to the injured. Mudfur asks her if she now understands why fighting for Sunningrocks is pointless, and Leopardfur is angered, thinking that RiverClan must go on fighting for the sake of their dead Clanmates.
