"I knew you were destined for great things. I've always thought it but...I just wonder if you're...If you're ready. Crookedstar was right in everything he said. You're bold and smart, and you never back down from a challenge.[...] You're too quick to anger. A deputy becomes a leader, and a leader must be able to keep their temper. I don't know if you—"

Chapter description[]

Leopardfur sits vigil for Oakheart, and she angrily thinks that she could have saved him if Crookedstar let her go with the battle patrol. At dawn, Crookedstar, Rippleclaw, Cedarpelt, and Voleclaw carry Oakheart's body out to be buried. Leopardfur inadvertently falls asleep and wakes up to find Frogleap next to her. She is still angry and tells him that she should have been at the battle. Frogleap answers that if she were at Sunningrocks, nobody would've been there to save Blackclaw. The she-cat sees Mudfur and remembers how he had said there was no glory in death and fighting. She tells Frogleap that Whitepaw would have been there, and he would do the same as her. However, the tom still insists that it was important for Leopardfur to stay, and RiverClan would have lost anyway. Around her, the other cats are unsettled, so Leopardfur and Frogleap decide that they should stay busy. She organizes a few hunting and border patrols.
Crookedstar and the cats who went to bury Oakheart return, and although he approves of Leopardfur's decision to organize patrols, he says that he must recognize a cat first. He beckons to Whitepaw, and mews that he has shown courage and loyalty. The leader gives him his warrior name, Whiteclaw. Leopardfur is proud of the young tom and wishes Sunfish was still alive. As the chant dies away, Crookedstar becomes solemn again, and remembers Oakheart, who was also his brother. He looks at Leopardfur, and then looks away again and says that he has chosen someone to be deputy. Leopardfur wonders who the cat is, and the leader states that she will be the new deputy. She is amazed, and Frogleap and Whiteclaw are proud. He continues that he knows that Leopardfur wanted to be at the battle, but she stayed and saved Blackclaw. However, some cats are doubtful, and Crookedstar says that he believes that Leopardfur will be a good deputy. She is excited and accepts the position, and is determined that she can do it, no matter what the Clan thinks. Frogleap chants her name, and the rest of the cats join, but some are still uncertain.
Frogleap and Whitepaw congratulate her, but Leopardfur tells them that she needs to speak to Mudfur. The medicine cat states that she must be pleased, and she replies that she is. Leopardfur then frowns and asks if he is as well. When her father does not answer, she asks if he is happy for her at all, and he replies that he is glad that Crookedstar thinks highly of her. Mudfur continues that he always knew she was going to be a great cat, but then hesitates. Leopardfur feels sick, and Mudfur finishes that he just wonders if she is ready. She wonders why he will not congratulate her, and the medicine cat continues that Crookedstar was right about her being brave and smart. When she asks why he won't support her, he darkens and tells her that she is too easily angered, which is not a good trait for a leader, and Leopardfur turns away, not wanting to hear more. She thinks to herself that although Mudfur loves her, he now is doubtful when she finally achieves something great, and she wonders if it is really so hard for him to just be happy for her.
