"A good deputy must know how to listen more than they speak. They must be prepared to fight for their Clan, but it should never be their first choice. [...] Fighting should be your last resort. And I hope that, when you are the one to make all the decisions for your Clan, you won't let anger sway you. I hope that you won't choose war when peace is still an option." |

Chapter description[]
- While waiting for ThunderClan to arrive to the Gathering, Leopardfur thinks about their apparent lack of shame for killing RiverClan warriors. She observes the cats mingling in the clearing, feeling uneasy about RiverClan sharing tongues with rival Clans and wishing they would not interact. As Frogleap stays beside her, she reflects on how little time they had had together due to her focus on encouraging battle training and proving herself as deputy. When ThunderClan arrives, Leopardfur questions Redtail's whereabouts and watches Lionheart and Whitestorm, wondering if they do not care about the RiverClan cats who were killed. Frogleap observes that WindClan is late, and Brokenstar orders the Gathering to begin before the fourth Clan arrives, despite protests.
- Brokenstar explains that ShadowClan has many kits and not enough prey, and demands that the other Clans share their territories for hunting. When a few cats argue, he reveals that he has driven WindClan from their home because they would not share, and tells them that they may need ShadowClan's protection. Crookedstar says that he has permitted ShadowClan to hunt in RiverClan territory without consulting his Clanmates, to their horror and Leopardfur's anger. When the Clans begin to leave Fourtrees, Leopardfur is approached by Tigerclaw, who comments on the need for youth in the Clans' deputies in order to bring new beliefs. She briefly agrees before rushing after Crookedstar and confronting her leader.
- Taking her aside, Crookedstar explains that he had known how she would respond to his decision. He argues that RiverClan cannot risk war with both ThunderClan and ShadowClan, and that Leopardfur needs to learn to control her temper. Leopardfur is hurt that she was not consulted, then grows angry when she learns that Crookedstar consulted Mudfur. She confronts her father, and he tells her that she is temperamental and that he still believes her to be special, but she is not listening to him or Crookedstar. He encourages her to consider a path in which she chooses peace over war to protect her Clan, but Leopardfur is not convinced. At camp, Frogleap approaches Leopardfur to speak with her about their relationship. He points out that she has little time for him as deputy, and says that he wants kits and a mate who can make time for him. Leopardfur realizes that he is right and agrees, believing that she needs to focus on her destiny.
