"I've realized something else, too. Maybe Mudfur's visions about me being important didn't mean that I'd be the cat destined to lead RiverClan to greatness. Maybe they meant I'd be the one to find... the warrior who will."

Chapter description[]

Leopardstar affirms that she knows her place as RiverClan's leader, per StarClan's decision, as she exits her den at the sound of Hawkfrost calling her name. She laments, however, that some days she wishes she wasn't the Clan's leader as Hawkfrost reports that ThunderClan have crossed the border. The leader notes that they don't need more trouble, having scented WindClan beforehand and that Mistyfoot, the Clan's deputy had gone missing. Leopardstar jokingly remarks that she regrets leaving her den some mornings. Her thoughts dwell on Mistyfoot's disappearance, as their relationship had been strained leading up to the previous day. The leader notes they had argued, but didn't think it was bad enough to make her leave RiverClan.
Her attention turns to how vocal Hawkfrost is about being made deputy if she decides to replace the blue-gray she-cat. She asks Hawkfrost if he was certain that it had been ThunderClan near the border. The tabby states that he is sure of it and that he believes they might try stealing prey, due to the recent troubles with Twolegs in the forest. He asks her if he can show the ThunderClan cats they aren't welcome in RiverClan territory, but Leopardstar has him look first before acting. She instructs him to scope the territory out first and then return to camp to have some Clanmates help, should trouble occur. The tabby races off and Leopardstar notices Mothwing sneaking behind him. She thinks about asking the tabby's sister to keep him out of trouble, but is plagued by thoughts of Mistyfoot. The leader reasons with herself that by letting their fight linger in her mind, she's letting herself and the Clan down and that things will need fixing to move on.
Leopardstar calls a Clan meeting and appoints Hawkfrost as RiverClan's temporary deputy in Mistyfoot's absence. Reedpaw, Mistyfoot's son, and Mosspelt share their concerns about the decision, wondering if Leopardstar believes the deputy to have left or to be dead. Leopardstar reassures her Clanmates that she believes in Mistyfoot as she has fine qualities, but states that RiverClan needs a deputy. As she says that, she thinks of Mistyfoot remarking about her only now realizing a leader needs help. The following two days, patrols are continuously sent to look for the blue-gray she-cat as Leopardstar wishes she could hear Mistyfoot tell her she was wrong. On one patrol, Hawkfrost questions the decision to have such a large patrol way from camp, pointing out the Twoleg problems, and suggesting that they may never find Mistyfoot. The leader states they might not find her, but they can't give up, especially after promising to Reedpaw that they’d look for his mother. Leopardstar finds herself feeling guilty at the notion of not finding the she-cat. Mosspelt states there is no sign of Mistyfoot and with little acceptance, Leopardstar makes the call to return to camp.
In the following days, Leopardstar still hasn't found any sign of Mistyfoot. She notes that some cats have come to accept the loss and have begun to move on, or have begun trying to. But, the leader finds Reedpaw keeping watch by himself and she decides to talk with him. Leopardstar talks to the young tom, seeing how much he cares for Mistyfoot, telling him that they may not be able to send out daily patrols to look for her, but that RiverClan will never stop looking for her. At this, Reedpaw questions his leader, but she explains she had spoken with the other Clan leaders and they have promised to look out and help where they can. Internally, Leopardstar knows the young tom can't understand how hard it was for her to put aside her pride to ask for help from the other Clans. Though she understands it had taught her a valuable lesson in that asking for help isn't a sign of weakness. As they talk, a cat calls for Leopardstar saying Mistyfoot is back. Reedpaw dashes at the news to greet the she-cat. Leopardstar follows and wonders what to say, but in the end promises to not let the she-cat down again. The leader tells herself that she'll let Mistyfoot serve RiverClan in her way, a way she deserves. She also comes to realize that Mudfur's past visions of her being important didn't mean it was her destined to lead RiverClan to greatness, that it may have instead meant she would be the one to find the warrior who will.
