Lightning Stripe is a ginger tabby she-cat with a white zigzag stripe shaped like lightning on her belly,[2] and amber eyes.[1]

Lightning Stripe was born to Thunderstar, ThunderClan's first leader, and his mate, Violet Dawn. Her siblings are Shell Claw, Feather Ear, and Sleek Fur. Her parents believed she would be the strongest of the litter, and they named her after Lightning Tail, Thunderstar's best friend, and the white stripe she had on her belly. Thunderstar thought of Lightning Stripe's namesake, and said that his trusted deputy would have loved to meet Lightning Stripe and her siblings. Thunderstar loved his daughter, and believed that Lightning Tail would live on through Lightning Stripe.

Lightning Stripe, along with her siblings, Shell Claw, Feather Ear, and Sleek Fur, are born to ThunderClan's leader, Thunderstar, and his mate, Violet Dawn. The kits are unnamed at first, though, as their parents having not come up with names yet. Upon seeing the ginger tabby kit, Lightning Stripe's parents comment on how they believe that she will be the strongest of their litter. Nudging the kit towards Thunderstar, Violet Dawn shows her mate the kit's white stripe on her belly, and it reminds Thunderstar of Lightning Tail, who would have loved to meet Lightning Stripe.
While Lightning Stripe and her siblings are too young to go to a Gathering, Thunderstar mentions their birth to WindClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and SkyClan, and they all wish the kits and their mother well. After returning home, Thunderstar finds out that Violet Dawn has named two of the kits, Shell Claw and Feather Ear. Violet Dawn urges Thunderstar to name the other two, and Lightning Stripe is given her name, both in honor of Lightning Tail, as well as the marking on her belly. Thunderstar comments that Lightning Tail will always be with him, through Lightning Stripe.
