Lightning Stripe is a ginger tabby she-cat with a white zigzag stripe shaped like lightning on her belly,^[2] and amber eyes.^[1]

"But the fourth, the tabby she-kit, stared up at him with amber eyes that blazed like fire. She was only a quarter-moon old, but he could already see intelligence and courage in her eyes. She was going to be something special; he knew it."

Lightning Stripe, along with her siblings, Shell Claw, Feather Ear, and Sleek Fur, are born to ThunderClan's leader, Thunderstar, and his mate, Violet Dawn. The kits are unnamed at first, due to their parents having not yet come up with good names for them. Upon seeing the ginger tabby kit, Lightning Stripe's parents comment on how they believe that she will be the strongest of their litter. Nudging the kit towards Thunderstar, Violet Dawn shows her mate the kit's white stripe on her belly, and it reminds the ginger tom of Lightning Tail, his best friend, who would have loved to meet Lightning Stripe.

Although Lightning Stripe and her siblings are too young to go to a Gathering to meet the other Clans, Thunderstar mentions their birth to WindClan, ShadowClan, RiverClan, and SkyClan, and they all wish the kits and their mother well. Skystar voices his excitement about being able to meet his grandchildren, saying how proud he was of Thunderstar. The younger tom thinks to himself that it would be good for Lightning Stripe and her littermates to have kin in other Clans, just in case they need help.

After returning home, Thunderstar finds out that Violet Dawn has given names to two of their kits, having decided on Shell Claw and Feather Ear. Violet Dawn urges Thunderstar to name the other two, and Lightning Stripe is given her name, both in honor of Lightning Tail, as well as the marking on her belly. Thunderstar comments that Lightning Tail will always be with him through Lightning Stripe, knowing just how special his young daughter is.
