Lights in the Mist (title)

The Lights in the Mist is a special title bestowed to cats who entered the Dark Forest to save the Clans, StarClan, and the Dark Forest from Ashfur's destruction.

Description

"I've had a dream. A terrible dream. A vision of thick, heavy mist falling over the lake territories. [...] No...No. I still felt the Clans' presence, underneath the mist. But I couldn't see through it. It's been troubling me ever since. [...] I did see a faint light shining. As if trying to break through."

Prior to Ashfur's schemes, Firestar had a dream of a heavy mist obscuring the Clans though he detected a faint light shining through.

When Ashfur dragged Squirrelflight into the Dark Forest, Shadowsight used his connection to Ashfur to dream himself into the Dark Forest. Willowshine's spirit dragged Rootspring into the Moonpool and he discovered the trapped spirits of their ancestors possessed by Ashfur on an island. Shadowsight distracts Ashfur long enough for Squirrelflight and Bramblestar's spirit to escape his clutches but is severely injured. Squirrelflight, Bramblestar, Rootspring, and Snowtuft—a Dark Forest cat—storm the island filled with possessed spirit cats and reunite Bramblestar with his body. However, Rootspring is kidnapped, and Bristlefrost and Shadowsight return to the Dark Forest with the help of the Sisters' summons to rescue him.

Because of Ashfur's influence, the Dark Forest is disappearing under thick fog and dark water, and warriors in StarClan begin to feel weaker without the Clans' connection. The trio along with Spiresight, Stemleaf, and Willowshine discover a thick wall of brambles blocking the entrance to StarClan. They learn that hope weakens the brambles. The group splits up to divert Ashfur while Shadowsight returns to the living world to fetch more cats to help. Bristlefrost convinces Redwillow, Maggottail, and Sparrowfeather to help, while Rootspring recruits Silverhawk with the help of Firestar's wandering spirit, and the Clans send one cat from each Clan to enter the Dark Forest with the help of the Sisters: Crowfeather, Violetshine, Graystripe, Mistystar, and Shadowsight, who steps up for Lightleap when she is too nervous. Needletail, Onestar, Firestar, Feathertail, Silverstream, Redtail, and Larksong from StarClan arrive through the barrier once it is wide enough. Once they reunite with the living cats, the group confronts Ashfur and his army of spirits.

In the midst of battle, Bristlefrost sacrifices herself to save Shadowsight by flinging herself and Ashfur into the dark water, drowning them both in the freezing darkness. The possessed spirits are able to enter StarClan, and the living cats return home, though Graystripe dies from his wounds. At the Gathering, Bramblestar honors the cats who entered the Dark Forest to save the Clans as the Lights in the Mist.
