Chapter Summary[]

Broken Shadow cries out in grief, immediately regretting her decision to leave Fallen Leaves, and Rising Moon comforts her. Half Moon is excited to travel with Jaypaw. Furled Bracken steps down as leader, allowing Stone Song to take his place, which surprises Jaypaw. Stone Song plans for them to leave at dusk, and the cats hunt as they prepare. Jaypaw thinks there is still something missing that the cats will need to survive in the mountains, but can't figure out what it is. Stone Song pulls him aside and asks him about his dreams. Jaypaw is unsure how to answer, but says he thinks it will happen again. Stone Song tells him he is willing to put his trust in the dreams and wherever they come from, and Jaypaw realizes that what the Ancients are lacking is a medicine cat and belief in StarClan. Jaypaw tells him the dreams are from their ancestors, who will guide them if they are willing to listen.
Jaypaw shares a vole with Half Moon before Whispering Breeze comes to tell them it's time to leave. Jaypaw looks at the stars and wonders if these cats also have ancestors watching over them. Owl Feather's kits are excited for the journey, and Running Horse and Cloudy Sun encourage each other, despite their reluctance to leave. Stone Song leads the group as they begin to travel, and Jaypaw and Half Moon trail near the back. Half Moon sees that of Owl Feather's kits has fallen and rushes to help. Jaypaw lingers behind to look over the lake and say good-bye, and he hears Rock call his name. Rock tells him it is time for him to return to the Clans, to Jaypaw's dismay. He looks for Half Moon one last time, and asks if the real Jay's Wing will return once he leaves. Rock explains that Jay's Wing vanished when the cats left for the mountains. None of the cats ahead of him notice that he has slipped away, and he follows Rock down a tunnel back to the forest of modern ThunderClan.
Jaypaw visits the lake and finds the stick, running his paws over the scratch marks. He recalls the sharpclaws he met, and how they walk beside him at the Moonpool. He wonders if they are the reason he is more powerful than StarClan, and questions if Lionblaze and Hollyleaf were also part of the ancient Clan. He has a vision of three cats casting long shadows across the lake as the moon rises behind them and recalls the prophecy, stating that the Three have come home.
