A spirit in an unspecified residence observes Puddleshine and Shadowpaw heading towards the Moonpool for the half-moon meeting, stating that a great change is coming to the Clans with Shadowpaw having a big role to play.
Shadowpaw, ShadowClan’s medicine cat apprentice, waits for his mentor Puddleshine so they can head to the half-moon meeting. His parents, Dovewing and Tigerstar, watch him off, causing Shadowpaw to feel embarrassed for their protectiveness because of his seizures he had when he was a kit. At the Moonpool, the medicine cats share news of how the prolonged leaf-bare has gravely affected their Clans. To their surprise, the Moonpool is beginning to freeze, and the medicine cats are unable to share dreams with StarClan. The medicine cats assume they will be able to communicate with their ancestors once the Moonpool thaws.
In SkyClan, Rootkit and Needlekit become apprentices. Rootpaw is embarrassed of his father Tree and his odd behavior, such as scaring Wrenkit that the spirits of her dead siblings are watching her, and Rootpaw hopes that his Clanmates will stop treating him weirdly because of his kin. Two days later, Rootpaw struggles with a battle move that his mentor Dewspring demonstrated, and Turtlepaw and Kitepaw tease him because he’s meant to be weird like his father. To prove himself, Kitepaw suggests that Rootpaw helps them gather herbs near down the lake. When they arrive at the frozen lake, Kitepaw and Turtlepaw continue to tease Rootpaw. Rootpaw realizes that they are trying to make him react, however, he loses his temper and charges toward Kitepaw and Turtlepaw. They dodge, and Rootpaw who is unable to slow down, plunges right into the lake.
Bristlepaw is out hunting with her mentor, Rosepetal, and she is determined to prove herself to her crush Stemleaf. Suddenly, Rosepetal yowls that something is wrong in SkyClan territory. They spot a yellow tom struggling in the freezing lake water, and Bristlepaw rushes to save him. Bristlepaw and Rosepetal decide to bring the yellow tom to ThunderClan's camp to treat him. While Alderheart and Jayfeather treat Rootpaw, Bramblestar comments Bristlepaw’s bravery and asks her to go on a patrol to inform Leafstar of Rootpaw’s condition. While waiting for the sharp winds to die down, Stemleaf and Bristlepaw hunt together, and Bristlepaw aspires that one day they’ll be mates. In the medicine den, The yellow apprentice grows to admire Bristlepaw’s bravery. His father later accompanies Rootpaw back to camp where Turtlepaw and Kitepaw are punished for their actions. Because of her bravery in rescuing Rootpaw, Bristlepaw is deemed ready for her warrior assessment. Her littermates Thriftpaw and Flippaw wish her good luck. However, despite her best attempts, Bristlepaw fails to catch any prey due to the leaf-bare scarcity.
Shadowpaw worries that StarClan’s silence is his fault since he’s not like the other medicine cats with his visions and seizures, so Puddleshine encourages him to take a break. The cold weather and scarcity of prey results in cats being irritable and taking desperate measures to find food; Tigerstar punishes Blazefire and Cinnamontail for eating prey from the Twolegplace. While playing with his sisters Lightleap and Pouncestep, Shadowpaw experiences a vision of ashes streaking on his pelt and Tigerstar and Bramblestar fighting each other. Later, the medicine cats meet at the Moonpool for the next half-moon meeting. However, they soon discover that the Moonpool is completely frozen and they cannot contact StarClan. They decide to end the meeting early, and while Puddleshine and Shadowpaw are heading back, the gray tabby apprentice wonders if this is his doing. That night, Shadowpaw is woken up by a mysterious voice urging him to go to the Moonpool alone. When he arrives at the Moonpool, Shadowpaw is suddenly struck by lightning. As Shadowpaw recovers, he hears the mysterious voice warning that there is a darkness in the Clans that must be driven out.
Rootpaw and Dewspring overhear Frecklewish and Fidgetflake express their worries about StarClan’s lack of communication. While hunting, Rootpaw and Dewspring notice Tree hunting by pretending to be a bush. Rootpaw’s successful hunting earns him praise from his Clanmates. However in ThunderClan, Bristlepaw is still struggling to catch anything after she failed her assessment a half-moon ago. At the Gathering, Bristlepaw reunites with Rootpaw, who inadvertently praises his successful hunting experiences. The Clan leaders argue about the lack of prey and the new borders until Jayfeather presses about StarClan’s silence. When cats start arguing, Tigerstar cuts them and says that Shadowpaw has received a message from StarClan. The others are doubtful of Shadowpaw’s vision, though Tigerstar vouches for his son’s gift. The Clan leaders decide to reflect about Shadowpaw’s message, though Shadowpaw notices an icy chill near Bramblestar.
Rootpaw decides to give Bristlepaw a piece of prey as thanks for saving his life, though he notices something off about Bramblestar. Bristlepaw is thoroughly embarrassed by Rootpaw’s gift, and Stemleaf gently teases that he likes her. Bristlepaw decides to attempt her warrior assessment again so she can be with Stemleaf and she successfully catches a mouse. Her family and kin warmly congratulate her, and Bramblestar names her Bristlefrost. Fresh off her ceremony, Bristlefrost asks Stemleaf if he wanted to be mates, but the ginger-and-white tom awkwardly reveals that he’s actually in love with Spotfur. Full of despair and humiliation, Bristlefrost retreats to the warriors’ den.
At the next half-moon meeting, the medicine cats worry StarClan’s prolonged silence isn’t due to the ice. While the others argue about the legitimacy of Shadowpaw’s visions, the voice calls out to Shadowpaw again, sending him images of Twigbranch, Lionblaze, Crowfeather, Mothwing, Tree, Jayfeather, and Dovewing. The voice insists the Clans have forgotten the warrior code and these codebreakers must be punished. Shadowpaw grows fearful of this vision and decides not to tell the others. However, he seeks his father’s comfort and reassurance when he and Puddleshine return to camp. Tigerstar reveals how he and Dovewing left ShadowClan to the large Twolegplace where Shadowpaw and his sisters were born, though they all eventually rejoined ShadowClan. Tigerstar worries this vision might harm Dovewing and urges Shadowpaw not to tell any other cat. However, Shadowpaw returns to the Moonpool for further answers, briefly running into Rootpaw on SkyClan’s land. At the Moonpool, the voice scolds Shadowpaw for questioning his vision, warning that Bramblestar will fall ill very soon. He provides instructions for how to cure the ThunderClan leader, and Shadowpaw relays his message to Tigerstar.
Rosepetal encourages her former apprentice to focus on her Clan and she may just find the right cat for her in the future. She joins Bramblestar’s hunting patrol, but the Clan leader abruptly collapses during the hunt. Bristlefrost and Stemleaf carry Bramblestar back to the medicine den where Alderheart promptly treats him, noting his father’s body is freezing. As Bramblestar loses consciousness, he warns Alderheart that the Clans must regain connection with StarClan. Meanwhile, the Clans–excluding ShadowClan–meet at the Moonpool to attempt to break the ice, though their actions are futile as the pool is frozen solid. With Bramblestar getting weaker, Tigerstar and Shadowpaw visit ThunderClan’s camp and Shadowpaw explains how to cure Bramblestar; his body must be taken to the frozen moor overnight for the sickness to snuff itself out. Squirrelflight refutes his idea since it might result in Bramblestar’s death. While fetching borage for Bramblestar, Bristlefrost grows to admire Spotfur’s courage.
Outraged by ShadowClan’s exclusion by the other Clans, Tigerstar closes his borders. Shadowpaw experiences a vision of fire destroying the Clans. Tigerstar and his counsel believe it might mean danger will come to all five Clans if they are separated, and Tigerstar calls for an emergency Gathering. Because of StarClan’s silence and Shadowpaw seemingly receiving his visions from StarClan, the other Clans are inclined to believe his warning. Squirrelflight concedes to Shadowpaw’s treatment to help Bramblestar. After moving Bramblestar’s unresponsive body to the moor, with Shadowpaw, Puddleshine, Jayfeather, Alderheart, Tigerstar, and Dovewing waiting not far. However, Shadowpaw soon realizes that Bramblestar isn’t breathing and he doesn’t wake up.
ThunderClan sits vigil for Bramblestar the following night, with Squirrelflight refusing to leave to receive her nine lives. After the Clan shares fond memories of their leader, the elders prepare his body for burial. However, to everyone’s amazement, Bramblestar is seemingly revived. Lionblaze and Fernsong share the joyous news to ShadowClan, thanking Shadowpaw for his efforts. At the emergency Gathering, Bramblestar is hesitant to reveal what he experienced during his death but credits Shadowpaw as their sole connection to StarClan while the Moonpool is still frozen. He also posits that cats breaking the warrior code might be a reason for their ancestors’ silence and urges the other Clan leaders to reflect about this. Meanwhile in SkyClan, Rootpaw stumbles upon an oddly familiar cat in the forest. Recognizing that cat is a ghost and realizing who it is, Rootpaw flees in terror with the ghost of Bramblestar calling for his help.

Bonus scene[]

In the days since Leafpool’s death, Jayfeather has been struggling to refocus and hasn’t visited the Moonpool for the half-moon meetings out of fear of seeing her in StarClan. Alderheart attempts to console him, though Jayfeather just pushes him aside, not wanting to accept the fact that he’s grieving his mother’s death. While sleeping in her empty nest, Jayfeather dreams of Leafpool though she fades away as he calls out for her. A few days later, Alderheart alerts Jayfeather of an injured cat near the Moonpool. When they arrive at the Moonpool, Jayfeather realizes it was a ruse set up by the other medicine cats to get him to the Moonpool with Alderheart explaining that he’s the injured cat. His friends encourage him to face his fears and seek her out in StarClan. Upon Jayfeather’s request, Alderheart sits close by.
Hollyleaf, Jayfeather’s sister, greets him in StarClan. While Jayfeather sharply retorts that Leafpool can’t be bothered to show up, Hollyleaf insists that she worries Jayfeather might be harboring resentment towards her, explaining how she used to have those feelings herself until she got to know Leafpool in StarClan. Leafpool arrives, apologizing for lying about the truth of their parentage and insists she’ll always be with him for the future. As Leafpool meows she loves him, the vision fades away. Finally finding his peace, Jayfeather returns to his old self and settles in Leafpool’s old nest upon Alderheart’s suggestion. Squirrelflight is pleased that things are finally going the way they should be, and Jayfeather agrees, though he’ll never admit it.
