Chapter description[]
- Bristlefrost leads her patrol towards the edge of the lake where the borage can be found. Cherryfall warns against walking too confidently over the ice, since it might not be frozen solid. Bristlefrost remembers the time she saved Rootpaw from drowning, and inwardly comments of how terrifying that was, yet here she is, doing something similar once again. Poppyfrost presses that no matter the danger, they have to keep going, and Spotfur suggests they circle around to find safer spots. Bristlefrost reminds herself not to snap at Spotfur, and she orders the patrol to follow her.
- The cats have to keep going further and further from the shore, and Bristlefrost signals for the patrol to stop when she hears ominous crackling from under her paws. Flywhisker thinks it would be a good idea to go back and try from another direction, but Bristlefrost protests. Both Spotfur and Poppyfrost advise against continuing this way. Despite her Clanmates' recommendation, Bristlefrost jumps over to the borage, and the ice breaks underneath her on her way back. Spotfur manages to drag her out from the icy depths, and they're overjoyed to find Bristlefrost managed to hold onto the leaves. Victorious, they hurry back to camp.
- Another day later, Bristlefrost visits the medicine cat den, remembering how Jayfeather had previously told her they just needed to wait. Now, she sees both him and Alderheart watching over Bramblestar, talking about how nothing has changed. Alderheart is desperate to keep trying, but Jayfeather tells him they won't try Shadowpaw's method. He is about to send Bristlefrost out, but Alderheart instead tells her to fetch Squirrelflight. The medicine cats explain to her that the borage did not work, and she says their only chance might be Shadowpaw's idea.
