"Bramblestar began to pad toward Rootpaw, who let out another gasp of mingled disbelief and terror. Rootpaw could see the trees at the other side of the clearing through Bramblestar's body. It reminded Rootpaw of all his father's stories of seeing dead cats."
Below contains in-depth information for chapter twenty-four of Lost Stars. If you are looking for a shorter summary of the entire book, please check the main article.
Rootpaw hears Needlepaw calling to him, and he asks what it is. His sister tells him that their parents want to talk to them outside of camp and that it's important. Rootpaw and Needlepaw find Tree and Violetshine under a tree. Tree's eyes are troubled, and he announces that he is unsettled by the Gathering last night. Tree is stunned when Violetshine says that Bramblestar is back, asking if she had how forgotten Darktail and The Kin used to punish those like Needletail.
Violetshine's expression is full of horror, and she is struggling to speak. Rootpaw wonders who Needletail is, and why the mention of it makes his mother look so devestated. Violetshine responds that that has nothing to do with the Clans. Rootpaw is shocked when Tree suggests that they become rogues again to be safe. Violetshine refuses, saying that she could not leave Hawkwing, to Rootpaw’s relief. Tree shares another idea, where they presuade Leafstar to go back to the gorge. Violetshine refuses again, saying she wouldn't go far from Twigbranch. Needlepaw puts in that she doesn't want to leave the Clans either. Tree accepts that he is outvoted, and asks if they can promise, as a family, that they will leave with or without SkyClan if the situation gets worse. Violetshine is unhappy about the decision, but agrees.
Rootpaw goes into the forest to collect his thoughts and clear his mind, though he knows that he is supposed to be having a hunting session with Dewspring. Rootpaw is eager for the day of his assessment, thinking that his apprenticeship is going great, wondering why he would want to leave. Rootpaw wonders what it is like to have normal parents, thinking that Violetshine is normal except over Needletail.
He spots a brown tabby tom at the clearing, and apologizes, hoping he has not disturbed him. The tom looks up, and Rootpaw gasps as he recognizes the ThunderClanleader, but he can't find any ThunderClan scent. As Bramblestar pads toward Rootpaw, he gasps again as he sees the trees and clearing through the brown tabby. Rootpaw thinks that he doesn't have the power to see ghosts, and that Bramblestar isn't dead. He whips around and races to camp, panicked, hearing a voice calling for help.
