"Well done. Even though you were disappointed, and you'd given up on finding prey, you still were smart enough to stay quiet, in case there happened to be prey nearby. That shows great instincts-the kind of instincts ThunderClan needs in its warriors."

Chapter description[]

Bristlepaw is waiting for Rosepetal to appear so she can take her warrior assessment. Thriftpaw and Flippaw are amazed she is going to take it, and Bristlepaw explains that her mentor was impressed at how she saved a SkyClan apprentice from drowning, so she persuaded Bramblestar to let her take the test. Thriftpaw and Flippaw have enthusiastic hopes that she will pass, and Bristlepaw is grateful for their confidence in her. Her sister wishes she could take the test too, and Bristlepaw is about to comfort her when Ivypool announces that it is time.
Bristlepaw crouches among the roots of an oak, trying hard to pick up the sound of prey. She starts to wish that her assessment would have been in newleaf, since it would have been much easier. Bristlepaw goes to look for prey, slithering forward silently, almost gagging from the cold when she opens her jaws to taste the air. She carries on searching, squeezing and climbing in the snow. At last, when Bristlepaw is ready to give up, she scents vole and for a heartbeat, forgets how cold she was in relief. Bristlepaw tracks the scent, but finds that the vole is on the WindClan side of the border. For a moment, she thinks of crossing the border and catching the vole, but she hesitates and eventually decides not to break the warrior code.
When she turns around, Rosepetal appears, praising her. Her mentor states that she was smart to keep silent even when she had given up, and didn't cross the border and give in to the urge to kill the prey even if she was hungry. Bristlepaw hopefully asks if she passed. Rosepetal is thoughtful, then regretfully shakes her head, saying that even though she did everything right, she couldn't catch prey. Bristlepaw is disappointed, but she manages to choke out that she understands. Rosepetal tells her to go get some prey from the fresh-kill pile, and she follows the warrior to camp, holding her head high and trying not to show disappointment.
Stemleaf comes along, asking how their new warrior is. Rosepetal tells Stemleaf that she didn't pass since there was no prey to catch. Stemleaf sympathetically says it was just bad luck, and Bristlepaw will pass easily in newleaf. Bristlepaw can hardly look at him, and she pads though the thorn tunnel into the stone hollow. Flippaw and Thriftpaw excitedly run to her, and Thriftpaw asks what happened. Bristlepaw watches Rosepetal going to report to Bramblestar, saying she failed because there was no prey. Flippaw and Thriftpaw comfort her, saying she is the best warrior to them. Bristlepaw is grateful for their comfort.
