Shadowpaw tends to Grassheart, who has whitecough. He's concerned it will become greencough, and Puddleshine says they are low on catmint.
Shadowpaw wonders if it's his fault they can't contact StarClan, and thinks about how he's always had unusual visions.
Puddleshine reprimands his apprentice for getting lost in his thoughts and ignoring him, restating that they need to go to Twolegplace to find catmint.
Shadowpaw hears his sisters, Pouncestep and Lightleap, talk happily after returning from a patrol, and wishes he was as confident as them.
Puddleshine leaves to get the catmint, telling Shadowpaw to take a break and talk to his friends.
Shadowpaw helps his mother, Dovewing, to weave branches into her and Tigerstar's den, and they discuss the cold weather and Shadowpaw's birth in the faraway Twolegplace.
Shadowpaw thinks his Clanmates look thin and hungry, and notices Blazefire and Cinnamontail have been missing since the previous day.
Strikestone and Whorlpelt get into a fight over Strikestone accusing Whorlpelt of putting thorns in his nest. Dovewing breaks it up and scolds them.
Shadowpaw asks his littermates if they've seen the missing warriors, but they haven't. He speaks to Tigerstar about it, and the leader sends out a patrol to search for them.
Shadowpaw eats and talks with his littermates again before going to check on Grassheart.
Puddleshine and the patrol return with Blazefire and Cinnamontail, who are ashamed to admit they were scavenging for food in Twoleg scrapcans.
Tigerstar scolds them and punishes them by forbidding them to take any prey from the fresh-kill pile for the remainder of the day and assigning them dawn hunting patrols until the next Gathering.
Puddleshine asks Shadowpaw to request that Tigerstar send out more hunting patrols in order to feed Grassheart. The leader says no, not wanting to overextend his warriors.
Lightleap calls Shadowpaw over to playfight with her and Pouncestep, and they scuffle.
Shadowpaw suddenly has a vision where he is standing beside a thawed Moonpool, and the spirits of StarClan fade away around him. He feels an invisible fire, and flecks of ash fall into his fur. He sees Bramblestar and Tigerstar fighting, but the vision fades before he can intervene or find out why.
He wakes to find his parents and siblings worriedly standing over him. Dovewing tells him he's had another seizure, and Tigerstar escorts him to the medicine den.
Rootpaw feels uneasy as he paces in the ThunderClan medicine den to keep his blood flowing.
He thinks he'll miss being around Bristlepaw.
Bristlepaw warns him to stay away from Kitepaw and Turtlepaw.
Tree and Plumwillow come to fetch Rootpaw. Tree asks why the ThunderClan cats are practicing battle moves, and Rootpaw feels embarrassed, but he confirms to Bristlepaw that Tree is his father.
On the way back to SkyClan camp, Tree asks Rootpaw how he is. Rootpaw explains what happened when he fell into the lake, and he thinks Tree is disappointed in him.
Tree reminds him there are other ways of living than being a warrior, and Rootpaw wonders why Tree doesn't try to fit into the Clan, wishing he had a different father.
The next morning, Rootpaw wakes up late and meets up with Dewspring for training.
He sees Leafstar punishing Kitepaw and Turtlepaw for their behavior, and Rootpaw objects. Dewspring tells him they should have known better, but he is dissapointed in Rootpaw as well.
When he returns from training, Rootpaw tries to make friendly conversation with Kitepaw and Turtlepaw, but they brush him off, upsetting him.
He speaks with Needlepaw, expressing how he wishes other cats would take him more seriously and not think he will be like his father. She assures him that he can prove himself, and tells him not to let the other apprentices bother him.
Bristlepaw is going to take her warrior assessment, and her siblings are impressed she is going to take it so soon. She explains that Rosepetal was so impressed by her saving Rootpaw that she convinced Bramblestar to let her have an early assessment.
Bristlepaw searches hard for prey, but doesn't find anything.
She scents a vole, but finds it is on WindClan territory, and hesitates before deciding not to break the warrior code by trying to catch it.
Rosepetal praises Bristlepaw's decision, but regretfully tells her she can't pass the assessment because she didn't catch any prey, even if it wasn't her fault that there was none to catch.
Back at camp, Stemleaf asks how their new warrior is, but Rosepetal tells him she didn't pass yet. He encourages her, saying it was only bad luck, but Bristlepaw feels miserable anyway.
Flippaw and Thriftpaw comfort their sister as Rosepetal goes to report to Bramblestar.
The medicine cats meet at the Moonpool, which has completely frozen over. They discuss the cold and lack of prey.
When they touch their noses to the pool, nothing happens.
Mothwing reassures the other medicine cats that things will go back to normal, and Jayfeather reveals that she doesn't believe in StarClan, so she must not be worried.
Mothwing says that after the Great Battle, she does believe in them, but isn't sure their intentions are always for the best.
The medicine cats discuss what will happen now, and whether the pool will melt and return to normal.
They try to touch their noses to the pool again, but there is still no response. They decide to end the meeting.
As Puddleshine and Shadowpaw return to ShadowClan, dark clouds cover the sky, and it begins to snow and thunder overhead. Puddleshine remarks this seems like a bad omen.
Shadowpaw awakens in the night, hearing a voice telling him to go to the Moonpool. He thinks it must be StarClan, and he sneaks out to the frozen pool.
He is struck by lightning, and hears a voice tell him there is darkness in the Clans that must be driven out. He runs away from the Moonpool, but the voice continues to repeat its message.
Rootpaw feels cold and hungry as Dewspring, tests him on warrior code, and finds it difficult to concentrate.
They overhear Frecklewish and Fidgetflake tell Leafstar and Hawkwing that they've been unable to contact StarClan.
Rootpaw asks what they should do, and Dewspring tells him to let the leader, deputy, and medicine cats handle it.
Rootpaw catches a large crow and feels very proud as Dewspring praises him.
They find Tree sitting in the snow, and Rootpaw feels embarrassed about his father as Tree explains his "think bush" hunting technique, in which he sits perfectly still and waits for prey to come to him.
Tree is proud of Rootpaw for his impressive catch, and Rootpaw feels less embarrassed once he sees that Tree has also caught several pieces of prey.
Needlepaw, Violetshine, and Leafstar all approve of Rootpaw's hunt.
Turtlepaw and Kitepaw are surprisingly respectful to Rootpaw, and he invites them to share the crow and talk with him and Needlepaw.
Kitepaw admits that Rootpaw impressed him with his bravery the day he fell into the lake, and Rootpaw is optimistic he can become friends with the two apprentices.
Bristlepaw is unable to catch anything on her hunting patrol, and becomes even more frustrated when she learns Flippaw and Thriftpaw have been more successful. Rosepetal assures her it isn't her fault there's no prey to be found.
Bristlepaw overhears Bramblestar and Squirrelflight speaking with Alderheart and Jayfeather.
The medicine cats reveal they have been unable to contact StarClan.
Bristlepaw is unconcerned, as she is more focused on the prey shortage, but Jayfeather overhears her comment to her siblings and scolds her harshly.
Bramblestar tells Bristlepaw, Flippaw, and Thriftpaw that they should come to that night's Gathering in order to learn about how serious the situation is.
At the Gathering, Bristlepaw speaks with Rootpaw, who thanks her for saving his life and asks if she's been made a warrior.
She tells him no, and is upset when he describes his recent successful hunt, snapping at him. She regrets it immediately, but is unable to apologize before the Gathering begins and he runs off.
Tigerstar, Harestar, and Mistystar all announce that their Clans have been struggling.
Tigerstar seems eager to challenge the other Clans on the new borders, which have made hunting difficult for ShadowClan, but Crowfeather, Mistystar, and Bramblestar quickly shut him down.
Jayfeather explains how the Clans have been unable to contact StarClan, and the other cats' worry makes Bristlepaw realize how important it is.
Tigerstar prompts his son, Shadowpaw, to share his vision from StarClan.
Shadowpaw narrates what the spirit told him, telling the gathered cats that the spirit guided him to the Moonpool.
Shadowpaw informs them that he thinks he got struck by lightning.
Some cat yowls their disbelief.
Reedwhisker asks Shadowpaw if he was sure he wasn't dreaming, as the RiverClan camp had once been struck by lightning, and Shadowsight probably would've died if he had been struck.
Shadowsight defends himself, saying that he is only telling the Gathering what he saw.
Nightcloud asks what the voice said, but Mallownose interrupts.
The RiverClan warrior asks why only a ShadowClan cat would receive a message from StarClan, especially an apprentice.
Tigerstar suggests only the leaders talk to Shadowpaw upon seeing his son's discomfort.
After the other leaders reach the other side of the clearing, Shadowpaw begins.
He tells the leaders what the voice told him.
Bramblestar asks if the voice sounded familiar, but Shadowpaw says that it didn't.
Mistystar sympathetically asks if he is sure that he wasn't dreaming, which Shadowpaw confirms that he wasn't.
Harestar states that Mallownose had a point, as it is dubious that only a ShadowClan apprentice would communicate with StarClan.
Tigerstar defend his son, bringing up the fact that Shadowpaw had seizures ever since his kithood.
Leafstar asks that since Shadowpaw didn't have a seizure, it is probably a dream.
Tigerstar asks Puddleshine what he thinks of this.
Puddleshine states that he believes that while Shadowpaw did have a true vision, it probably wasn't from StarClan.
After hearing this, the leaders state that they need to speak with their deputies and medicine cats.
Rootpaw is out on a training session with his mentor, Dewspring, his sister, Needlepaw, and his sister's mentor, Reedclaw.
Dewspring and Reedclaw demonstrate a battle move.
Needlepaw and Rootpaw practice it.
They return to SkyClan camp.
Reedclaw and Dewspring report their apprentices' progress to Tree.
Tree reminds his children to not be too obedient, as it is important to think for themselves.
Rootpaw thinks about Bristlepaw, and after looking at the prey-pile, he gets an idea.
He goes to Hawkwing and Leafstar.
Hawkwing asks him about his apprenticeship, to which he replies that it is well.
Rootpaw tells the two about his idea.
Leafstar and Hawkwing go over what Rootpaw should and should not do, before letting him go bring Bristlepaw a piece of prey for her kindness and bravery.
Rootpaw is accompanied by Dewspring and Sunnypelt to the ThunderClan border.
Berrynose and Poppyfrost are hostile, but Birchfall allows them to come back to camp.
ThunderClan seems unfriendly, and Rootpaw almost regrets coming here.
He finally meets Bristlepaw, and he explains that he's brought her this prey in order to repay her for saving his life.
Bristlepaw appears embarrassed and is about to turn down this gift, but seeing her hungry Clanmates, she reluctantly agrees and says she will give it to the elders.
Rootpaw is saddened by the idea that she won't keep the vole to herself like he wanted.
Bramblestar thanks Rootpaw for his generosity, and the three SkyClan cats leave.
Sunnypelt claims this whole ordeal was a waste of time and prey.
Unsettled by a weird feeling about Bramblestar, Rootpaw asks Dewspring and Sunnypelt if they noticed anything weird about him, to which they both answer no.
Shadowpaw returns to the Moonpool, although he thinks it's a foolish idea, convinced that he must learn more about the voice.
He touches his nose to the Moonpool, but nothing happens. He gives up and prepares to walk home.
The voice speaks to him again, telling him that there are still codebreakers in the Clans who must be punished.
Shadowpaw is deeply scared as he realizes the voice is an unfamiliar tom, and wonders who he is and what he wants.
Shadowpaw protests that Dovewing is innocent, and the other cats may be as well.
The voice falls silent for a moment, and Shadowpaw worries he has driven away the only StarClan cat who will speak with the Clans.
The voice argues that they have a code for a reason, and tells Shadowpaw to watch what happens to the Clans and the codebreakers.
He warns that Bramblestar will become sick, and no cat will be able to cure him.
The voice tells Shadowpaw how he can save Bramblestar, but the plan sounds very dangerous, even crazy. He is unsure if the other medicine cats will listen to him.
Shadowpaw promises to carry out the instructions, and the tom tells him the fate of the Clans rests on his shoulders.
Shadowpaw returns to his camp and falls asleep.
He dreams that Bramblestar is asleep at his paws, with snow falling in his fur.
Shadowpaw wakes up and goes to speak with Tigerstar, telling him they need to talk.
