He does not want his Clanmates to compare him to Tree.
When training, Rootpaw cannot get the fighting move done, so Dewspring says they will try again the next day.
Rootpaw follows Kitepaw and Turtlepaw to the lake to find herbs for Frecklewish and Fidgetflake .
The older apprentices continue to taunt Rootpaw and he lashes out at them, but falls through the ice and into the lake.

Kitepaw and Turtlepaw admit that this is their fault.

Tigerstar sends out a search patrol for Blazefire and Cinnamontail .
The patrol returns and Blazefire and Cinnamontail admit they had been scavenging for food in Twoleg scrapcans, which Tigerstar scolds and punishes them for.
He also declines Puddleshine's request to send more hunting patrols.
Shadowpaw is playing with his siblings when he suddenly sees an omen .
He wakes from a seizure , dazed and confused.
Rootpaw feels uneasy as he paces in the ThunderClan medicine den.
He thinks he will miss being around Bristlepaw.
Bristlepaw warns him to stay away from Kitepaw and Turtlepaw.
Tree and Plumwillow come to fetch Rootpaw.
Embarrassed, Rootpaw he confirms to Bristlepaw that Tree is his father.
On the way back to SkyClan camp , Tree asks Rootpaw how he is.
Tree reminds him there are other ways of living than being a warrior, and Rootpaw wonders why Tree does not try to fit into the Clan, wishing he had a different father.
The next morning, Rootpaw wakes up late and meets up with Dewspring for training.
He sees Leafstar punishing Kitepaw and Turtlepaw for their behavior, which Rootpaw objects to.
Dewspring tells him they should have known better, but he is disappointed in Rootpaw as well.
Rootpaw fails to make friendly conversation with Kitepaw and Turtlepaw.
Bristlepaw is going to take her warrior assessment early after impressing Rosepetal with her bravery.
Rosepetal praises Bristlepaw's decision, but regretfully tells her she cannot pass the assessment without any prey caught.
Back at camp , Stemleaf tries to encourage Bristlepaw.
The medicine cats meet at the frozen Moonpool, discussing the cold and lack of prey.
When they touch their noses to the pool, nothing happens.
Mothwing reassures the other medicine cats that things will go back to normal and Jayfeather reveals that she does not believe in StarClan, so she must not be worried.
Mothwing says that she does believe in them after the Great Battle , but is not sure their intentions are always for the best.
The medicine cats discuss what will happen now and whether the pool will melt and return to normal.
As Puddleshine and Shadowpaw return to ShadowClan, dark clouds cover the sky, and it begins to snow and thunder overhead.
Puddleshine remarks this seems like a bad omen.
Shadowpaw awakens in the night, hearing a voice telling him to go to the Moonpool.
He is struck by lightning and hears a voice tell him there is darkness in the Clans that must be driven out.
Dewspring tests Rootpaw on the warrior code.
They overhear Frecklewish and Fidgetflake tell Leafstar and Hawkwing that they have been unable to contact StarClan.
Rootpaw catches a large crow and feels very proud as Dewspring praises him.
They find Tree sitting in the snow, which Rootpaw feels embarrassed about.
Tree is proud of Rootpaw for his impressive catch.
Rootpaw feels better once he sees that Tree has also caught several pieces of prey.
Needlepaw, Violetshine , and Leafstar all approve of Rootpaw's hunt.
Turtlepaw and Kitepaw are surprisingly respectful to Rootpaw, and he invites them to share the crow and talk with him and Needlepaw.
Kitepaw admits that Rootpaw impressed him with his bravery the day he fell into the lake, and Rootpaw is optimistic he can become friends with the two apprentices.
Bristlepaw is unable to catch anything on her hunting patrol.
She overhears Bramblestar and Squirrelflight speaking with Alderheart and Jayfeather about the medicine cats being unable to contact StarClan.
Bristlepaw is unconcerned and Jayfeather scolds her for her comment.
Bramblestar tells her and her siblings to attend that night's Gathering in order to learn about how serious the situation is.
At the Gathering, Bristlepaw speaks with Rootpaw, who thanks her for saving his life and asks if she has been made a warrior.
She tells him no and snaps at him.
Tigerstar, Harestar , and Mistystar all announce that their Clans have been struggling.
Jayfeather explains how the Clans have been unable to contact StarClan, making Bristlepaw realize how important this is.
An argument soon breaks out.
Tigerstar silences everyone, stating that Shadowpaw has received a message from StarClan and beckons his son forward.
Shadowpaw narrates what the spirit had told him and thinks he had been struck by lightning at the Moonpool, prompting disbelief from many cats.
Reedwhisker doubts that Shadowpaw would have survived, but Shadowpaw defends himself.
Mallownose asks why only a ShadowClan cat had received a message from StarClan, especially an apprentice.
Tigerstar suggests only the leaders talk to Shadowpaw upon seeing his son's discomfort.
Shadowpaw tells the leaders what the voice had told him.
Harestar and Mistystar are doubtful, but Tigerstar defends his son, reminding them of his seizures ever since his kithood.
Puddleshine believes Shadowpaw but states that the vision probably had not been from StarClan.
Rootpaw and Needlepaw arrive to camp from a training session.
Reedclaw and Dewspring report their apprentices' progress to Tree.
Tree reminds his kits to not be too obedient, as it is important to think for themselves.
Rootpaw comes up with the idea of bringing prey to Bristlepaw to thank her.
Leafstar and Hawkwing allow him to go alongside Dewspring and Sunnypelt .
Berrynose , Poppyfrost and Birchfall find them at the border and accompany them back to camp.
ThunderClan seems unfriendly.
Bristlepaw wants to decline Rootpaw's gift but accepts for the sake of her hungry Clanmates.
Bramblestar thanks Rootpaw for his generosity and the three SkyClan cats leave.
Rootpaw is unsettled by Bramblestar but Dewspring and Sunnypelt had not noticed anything off about him.
[ ]
Bristlepaw watches Rootpaw and the patrol leave camp, feeling embarrassed.
Stemleaf teases her about Rootpaw's crush on her and Bristlepaw reacts defensively.
She decides she needs to pass her next assessment, thinking Stemleaf will want to be mates with her then.
The next day, Bristlepaw wakes Rosepetal up to start the assessment.
After a bit of time spent tracking, she successfully catches a mouse .
Rosepetal emerges from her hiding spot, announcing that Bristlepaw has passed her assessment.
Bristlepaw wants to catch more prey, but Rosepetal insists that she has proved herself already.
The Clan welcomes Bristlepaw warmly, congratulating her.
Bramblestar names her Bristlefrost, officially becoming a warrior.
Bristlefrost confesses to Stemleaf.
He turns her down, admitting he has never felt that way about her, and that he already has eyes on Spotfur .
Bristlefrost is heartbroken, fleeing camp as her emotions overwhelm her.
The medicine cats gather at the Moonpool for a half-moon meeting.
Shadowpaw notes that the others are wary of him.
He also takes note of how uneasy they all are, barely managing to share news about their Clans.
They discuss StarClan's possible abandonment of the Clans.
The medicine cats touch their noses to the Moonpool, but nothing happens.
Shadowpaw feels some sort of power around them but sees nothing, and the others do not believe him.
He sees a vision of the codebreakers , which he decides to only reveal to his father back at camp.
Shadowpaw explains that he had seen Dovewing, which prompts Tigerstar to reveal that she had indeed broken the code.
Tigerstar makes Shadowpaw promise to keep this a secret.
Rootpaw convinces Dewspring to come with him on a hunt.
Rootpaw is trying to make up for giving a vole to ThunderClan.
They are unsuccessful, but Dewspring allows Rootpaw to stay out for a little longer.
Rootpaw runs into Shadowpaw by the lake's edge.
Shadowpaw explains that he is going to the Moonpool in search of answers.
Rootpaw accompanies Shadowpaw for part of the way.
Shadowpaw touches the Moonpool, but nothing happens.
The voice speaks of the codebreakers in the Clans who must still be punished.
Shadowpaw protests Dovewing's and the others' innocence, but the voice argues that they have a code for a reason.
It tells Shadowpaw how only he will be able to save Bramblestar once he falls incurably sick.
Shadowpaw promises to carry out the instructions, and the tom tells him the fate of the Clans rests on his shoulders.
Shadowpaw returns to camp and dreams of a sleeping Bramblestar with snow falling in his fur.
Shadowpaw speaks with Tigerstar.
Bristlefrost mopes in camp.
Rosepetal comforts her about her heartbreak with Stemleaf.
With her mood improved, Bristlefrost goes on a hunting patrol.
Bramblestar comments harshly and calls Squirrelflight soft when she tries to soothe him, which he apologizes for.
Bristlefrost notes that Bramblestar is too loud, alerting every prey in the vicinity.
He collapses with a yowl, unconscious.
Back at camp, Alderheart explains that Bramblestar is not yet dying but will if his condition does not improve.
Bramblestar wakes up, describing a chaotic, dark dream.
He insists that they have to get back in touch with StarClan.
He wails, attacking an unseen enemy, and collapses once more.
All Clans, with the exception of ShadowClan, gather by the Moonpool.
Rootpaw meets Bristlefrost, who announces that she is not an apprentice anymore.
She apologizes to him for how she had behaved last time.
Rootpaw comforts her about her shortcomings as a warrior so far.
The leaders and medicine cats hold a vote about whether they should try and break the ice of the Moonpool.
Tree states that ShadowClan should have been invited as well.
He argues with Leafstar, and in the end, cats who do not wish to tamper with the Moonpool are allowed to leave.
The remaining cats push rocks onto the Moonpool, but all their efforts are in vain.
Bristlefrost is out hunting to try and escape the tension in camp.
She and Snaptooth successfully catch prey together.
They overhear Berrynose and Mousewhisker talking about Bramblestar, who fear that their leader will not be able to continue with his next life without StarClan.
The patrol heads home while Bristlefrost worries about Bramblestar.
Later in the day, Tigerstar and Shadowpaw enter the ThunderClan camp.
They explain that Shadowpaw had seen a vision and knows how to cure Bramblestar.
Jayfeather accuses them both of wanting to cause more trouble for ThunderClan, so they leave.
Alderheart wants to try Shadowpaw's treatment, but Squirrelflight does not allow it.
Bristlefrost, Cherryfall , Poppyfrost, and Spotfur find the borage .
It is close to the lake, which Cherryfall warns might not be frozen solid yet.
The patrol tries to find another way to reach the herb but ends up unsuccessful.
Bristlefrost suddenly sprints over to the borage, causing the ice to break underneath her.
The patrol brings back the borage, and the medicine cats use it on Bramblestar, but there is no sign of improvement.
Squirrelflight considers Shadowpaw's treatment.
Tigerstar calls for a Clan meeting.
He decides to close ShadowClan's borders after learning that the other Clans defiled the Moonpool.
Outside of camp, Shadowpaw receives an omen about fire separating the Clans.
An emergency Gathering is held, where Shadowpaw retells the omen.
Squirrelflight reveals that Bramblestar's condition is worse than she had originally said.
She allows Shadowpaw to use his method on Bramblestar.
The leaders and medicine cats of ThunderClan and ShadowClan watch Shadowpaw try and cure Bramblestar.
They leave Bramblestar in a snow den as per Shadowpaw's instructions.
After a night passes, Shadowpaw realizes that Bramblestar has died.
The cats theorize that this must mean Bramblestar will continue on with his next life.
Once the sun rises, Jayfeather officially declares Bramblestar as dead.
ThunderClan is preparing to bring Bramblestar back home for his vigil .
Squirrelflight refuses to try and receive her nine lives without having mourned her mate.
Bramblestar's family and friends reminisce.
Jayfeather confronts Squirrelflight about allowing Shadowpaw to kill Bramblestar.
Just before Bramblestar gets buried, he comes back to life.
Shadowpaw tries to tend to Snowbird , but the warrior refuses, asking for Puddleshine instead.
Shadowpaw laments on indirectly killing Bramblestar, knowing his parents doubt him now too.
A ThunderClan patrol arrives to camp to reveal that Bramblestar is alive and Shadowpaw's method worked.
All the cats praise Shadowpaw.
The five Clans attend another one of Bramblestar's emergency meetings.
They discuss Shadowpaw's solitary connection with StarClan.
Jayfeather reveals that Mothwing does not believe in the starry ancestors.
Some cats doubt Shadowpaw, deeming the whole ordeal a ShadowClan plot.
Bramblestar confirms that he had seen StarClan after dying.
Shadowpaw lies and says that he has not received any more visions.
Needlepaw tells Rootpaw to come outside camp because his parents want to talk with them.
Tree expresses concern regarding the Gathering last night.
He reminds Violetshine of how Darktail had punished cats for breaking rules, just like Bramblestar is suggesting now.
Tree suggests they all become rogues again in order to stay safe.
Violetshine and Needlepaw reject the idea, which gives Rootpaw relief.
Tree makes them promise that if things get even worse with the Clans, they will leave.
Rootpaw goes out into the forest by himself to clear his mind.
He sees a faint Bramblestar looking straight at him.
Terrified, Rootpaw runs away, but the ghost calls after him.
