"I have to keep count. We've won so many battles these past moons, it's hard to remember them all."
— Loudbelly to Frogleap and Crookedstar in Crookedstar's Promise, page 461

Loudbelly is a dark brown tom.[11]

Loudbelly was a RiverClan elder who previously served as a warrior under Crookedstar's and Leopardstar's leaderships in the forest territories. Loudkit was born to Timberfur and Ottersplash alongside his siblings, Reedkit and Sedgekit. As an apprentice, Loudpaw was mentored by Oakheart. After becoming a warrior, Loudbelly mentored Silverpaw and Pikepaw. When RiverClan joined with ShadowClan to form TigerClan, Loudbelly was nervous about fighting under Tigerstar. Following the ShadowClan leader's death by Scourge, Loudbelly encourged Leopardstar that they still had a chance against BloodClan. Loudbelly later retired to the elders' den. When the Clans left on the Great Journey, he chose to remain behind with Frostfur, Shadepelt, and Speckletail.

Crookedstar's Promise[]

Piketooth: "At least we know why you're called Loudbelly. It's been rumbling since we left camp."
Loudbelly: "I've had half a sparrow in two days! Of course it's rumbling!"
—Piketooth and Loudbelly Crookedstar's Promise, page 446
Loudkit is born to Ottersplash and Timberfur, along with his littermates, Reedkit and Sedgekit. Loudkit and his siblings are a playful bunch, often seen playing games in RiverClan's camp. Loudkit is seen on a kit-patrol searching for Blackkit, while he hides from them, using Crookedjaw's belly fur to disguise him. Loudkit tells the kit-patrol to stop, because he can smell the hiding Blackkit. When Crookedjaw jumps out of the way to reveal Blackkit, Loudkit, along with Reedkit, Sedgekit, and Skykit pounce on top of Blackkit. Loudkit squeaks that he found Blackkit. When Hailstar calls a Clan meeting, Ottersplash tells her kits to come back to the nursery, Loudkit, Reedkit, and Sedgekit pad back the nursery.
Loudkit flexes his claws, asking what would happen if the Twolegs invaded the RiverClan camp, and Crookedjaw states that they will not, even asking Oakheart, who reiterates Crookedjaw's point.
Loudkit is later made an apprentice with Oakheart as his mentor. Loudpaw is fidgeting, obviously waiting for the ceremonies to be over so he can start training. After the ceremonies, Loudpaw, along with his sister, Sedgepaw, run to see Ottersplash, who congratulates her kits. Later Loudpaw is seen barging past his siblings, telling them he will be the first to climb Sunningrocks. Crookedjaw asks Loudpaw if he would like to come with him and Sedgepaw training, Loudpaw says yes and begs Oakheart to let him go. Loudpaw is seen asking if they can swim, because he and the other apprentices have only swum around in the reedbeds. Crookedjaw says no, because it is too cold, and he also says that Ottersplash wouldn't be too happy he brought the new apprentices back with whitecough. Loudpaw and his siblings then bound off after Beetlenose, looking for pelt-dens.
Loudpaw later says that he wants to learn battle moves, so that RiverClan can win back Sunningrocks, which ThunderClan had taken. Loudpaw, after listening to the mentors, starts ripping up the grass, asking if they were going to learn battle moves. Loudpaw watches his siblings climb trees, and when Oakheart tell him it is his turn, Loudpaw says he is a RiverClan cat, and he needs to learn to swim, not climb trees. Oakheart tries to persuade Loudpaw to climb and obeys after Crookedjaw tells them that a dog is coming. Oakheart nudges the apprentice up the tree, and he yelps with triumph when he gets the hang of it.
Later, he and his siblings are being assessed in battle moves by their mentors, when a dog nearly reaches and attacks the RiverClan camp. The three are forced up a tree by Oakheart, Crookedjaw, and Beetlenose, who go to engage the dog. He later becomes a warrior by the name of Loudbelly. Loudbelly is then on a patrol with Crookedstar and Piketooth. Piketooth comments on Loudbelly's stomach rumbling, to which Loudbelly replies that he is only eaten half of a sparrow in two days, implying that the prey is scarce during leaf-bare. Loudbelly later asks Dawnbright if telling all the Clan that she caught three fish in three dives counts as boasting. And Crookedstar tells Loudbelly he supposedly never boasts.

Leopardstar's Honor[]

Loudbelly: "Should I take Pikepaw out for training?"
Leopardstar: "I guess."
Loudbelly: "He should practice fighting skills. All the apprentices should."
Leopardstar: "Why? Do you think they'd stand a chance against BloodClan? They'd be ripped to pieces."
Loudbelly: "They should be allowed a chance to try."
Leopardstar: "Train them all."
—Leopardstar and Loudbelly after Tigerstar's death Leopardstar's Honor, page 524
Loudkit plays hide-and-seek with the other kits, and quickly defends his sister Sedgekit from Leopardkit's claim that Sedgekit does not always follow the rules. As apprentices, Loudpaw and the others agree to hold back their warrior assessments until Skypaw passes hers, and he is later named Loudbelly. Loudbelly attends Whitefang's vigil, mourning for the loss of his Clanmate. Later, Loudbelly is chosen for the patrol to reclaim Sunningrocks, and he and Mistyfoot later help carry Oakheart's dead body back to camp. Loudbelly himself is also injured, and Leopardfur helps him to Mudfur's den. Loudbelly rests in the medicine cat's den for a few days to recover. After she is named deputy, Leopardfur assigns Loudbelly to repair the camp wall with Frogleap and Skyheart.
Loudbelly hunts during a rainstorm with Leopardfur, Frogleap, and Skyheart. He successfully catches a perch. When a tree branch hits Frogleap as he resurfaces, Loudbelly watches in horror as his friend's body is swept away downstream. They manage to find Frogleap's body and the three of them carry him back to camp. When a flood sweeps through RiverClan's camp, Loudbelly, Blackclaw, and Timberfur search for Mistyfoot's missing kits and Frogleap's body. Later, Loudbelly wakes Leopardfur up when a fire is seen across the river in ThunderClan's territory. He questions Graystripe when the former ThunderClan warrior wishes to help the ThunderClan cats. Crookedstar agrees, and he sends Leopardfur, Loudbelly, Graystripe, Blackclaw, Heavystep, and Mudfur to check the river. They assist ThunderClan across the river and into their camp for shelter.
After Crookedstar dies, Loudbelly glances sadly at his leader's empty den, though he looks on eagerly when Leopardstar is prepared to name her deputy. Loudbelly participates in a battle to reclaim Sunningrocks from ThunderClan, though they are forced to retreat. Now a part of TigerClan, Loudbelly later participates in a raid on WindClan's camp to coerce them to join TigerClan, though Loudbelly and the others are uncertain about the attack since Stonefur's death. Loudbelly is chosen to mentor Pikepaw during the turmoil in RiverClan. After Tigerstar's death, Loudbelly insists all the apprentices should be battle training so they can stand a chance against BloodClan.

In the Novellas[]

Redtail's Debt[]

Although unnamed, Loudbelly participates in the battle at Sunningrocks with Oakheart, Stonefur, and two other warriors. Loudbelly slashes at Ravenpaw and crowds him when Redtail orders him to flee. After Oakheart died, he and another warrior drag his body away.

Mothwing's Secret[]

Mudfur treats Loudbelly's joints with comfrey. Mothwing chews a poultice and asks to place it on Loudbelly, but Mudfur declines since she is not his apprentice officially yet. On the eve of the Great Journey, Loudbelly and Shadepelt stay behind with ThunderClan's elders and sit vigil over Mudfur's body.

Trivia[]

Mistakes[]

  • In Crookedstar's Promise, it is said that Leopardstar's generation, including Loudbelly, all decided to wait until Leopardkit reached her sixth moon before they were all apprenticed,[6] but in Leopardstar's Honor, Leopardkit was apprenticed early at five moons old.[14]

Author statements[]

  • In Erin Hunter Chat 6, Vicky confirmed that Loudbelly, Speckletail, Frostfur, Shadepelt, and any other elders left behind may have died up to a few moons after the Clans left. Their confirmed cause of death is unknown, however.[5]

Continuity[]

The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.

  • In Su Susann's "Missing Kits" on Vicky's Facebook, Loudbelly is described with amber eyes.[15] Dawnbright and Loudbelly were mates and Whiteclaw was their son.[16] The pair had another litter of Voletooth, Stonestream and Splashpaw, a white she-cat with ginger tabby patches, blue eyes, and a distinctive patch that made the right side of her face white and the left side ginger. Splashpaw drowned in a raging river that also claimed Stonestream's right front leg.[17]
