Crookedstar's Promise

Magpie: "What's moss-ball?"
Piper: "What's moss?"
Crookedkit: "How about corn-ball? Here!"
—Crookedkit teaching the kits how to play corn-ball Crookedstar's Promise, page 93
Magpie is a young kit of Mitzi that has taken ill with a cough that refuses to go away on its own. Crookedkit notices how Magpie feels, and recalls memories of Brambleberry, the medicine cat of RiverClan. Crookedkit suggests coltsfoot to try and heal his illness. His mother and uncle, Fleck, are doubtful, but Fleck assures Mitzi that Crookedkit's method is at least worth trying.
Magpie and his littermates, Piper, Soot, and Mist, are very curious kits, and they bombard Crookedkit with many questions when he first arrives at the barn. Magpie seems extremely curious about the Moonstone in particular, accidentally calling it the Foodstone after overhearing Fleck talk to Crookedkit about his travels. Mitzi reprimands the young kit, telling him not to be so daft, and that he's far too young to even consider taking such a trip.
After Fleck leaves, Crookedkit offers to watch Mitzi's kits while she goes to get a drink, and promises to keep them in the hollow until either she or Fleck return. To keep them busy, he tries to teach the kits how to play moss-ball. Magpie curiously asks what the game is, his voice sounding much better after recovery from his illness.
While Crookedkit and Fleck are out hunting, Fleck realizes that the Twolegs are harvesting the field, meaning they are cutting the corn down. Crookedkit realizes that Mitzi and the kits are in danger, and hears Magpie wailing about monsters. Fleck is able to rescue Magpie, Piper, and Mist, but Soot gets lost during the panic. Crookedkit offers to search for Magpie's missing littermate, and successfully does so, saving the terrified kit. Crookedkit offers to find the missing kit, and when he does, Soot is terrified. After this incident, Crookedkit takes time to think and realizes that he needs to go back home to RiverClan. His departure upsets Magpie and his littermates tremendously, as they had grown very close to Crookedkit.
After Crookedkit returns to RiverClan, he becomes an apprentice named Crookedpaw. During his journey to the Moonstone, he runs into Magpie's sister, Soot. Crookedpaw asks about Magpie and the others, and Soot says that Fleck told her Magpie and Mist were taken to hunt mice on a different farm. Soot believes that Magpie is doing well, and bids Crookedpaw farewell. The RiverClan cat vows to remember Magpie and the other barn cats often and fondly.

The Ultimate Guide

Although not directly mentioned by name, Magpie is alluded to on Crookedstar's page. Crookedkit, upon leaving RiverClan, went to stay with some barn cats for a while, and learned from them. While he loved his time there, he realized he was a RiverClan cat at heart, and left Magpie and his family.

  • Magpie was mistakenly called a she-cat.[2]
