Magpie is a black-and-white tom.

Magpie is a young cat living in a barn with his family, consisting of his mother, Mitzi, siblings, Piper, Soot, and Mist, and uncle, Fleck. Magpie is a curious kit, asking Crookedkit about his travels. Initially a sickly kit, Magpie's health improves after a suggestion from Crookedkit, who knows of herbs and their usage from being around RiverClan's medicine cat, Brambleberry. While Mitzi is hesitant at first to give Magpie coltsfoot, she later gives in upon urging from Fleck, and the young black-and-white kit's health soon returns.

Magpie enjoys playing with Crookedkit, and he and his siblings learn to play moss-ball from Crookedkit. As time passes, Magpie's cough gets better, and while his voice is still a little hoarse, he has gotten a lot better than when Crookedkit had first arrived at the barn. When the Twolegs are cutting corn stalks near where Mitzi and her kits are, Fleck and Crookedkit rush to save them, hearing Magpie's terrified screeches.

After these events, Crookedkit announces that he is leaving and going back to RiverClan. Magpie is saddened upon hearing this, looking up at Crookedkit with wide, sad eyes. After some time passes, Crookedkit, now Crookedpaw, meets Magpie's sister, Soot, on the way to the Moonstone, and he learns that Magpie was taken to another place, and that he is doing fine.

Crookedstar's Promise

Magpie is introduced to Crookedkit as one of Mitzi's four kits. He and his littermates, Piper, Soot, and Mist, all bombard Crookedkit with questions when he first arrives. He seems curious about the Moonstone, accidentally calling it the "Foodstone," and asks if he could go there. He gets the name from overhearing Fleck talk to Crookedkit about where he was traveling to. Mitzi reprimands the young kit, telling him not to be so daft, and that he's far too young to even consider taking such a trip.

Throughout Crookedkit's initial meeting with the barn cats, Magpie appears to be sick. It is noted by Crookedkit that he has a cough, which doesn't seem to want to go away on its own. The young RiverClan cat remembers what Brambleberry, RiverClan's medicine cat, would have done. He tells Mitzi to give Magpie coltsfoot for his cough. She seems a little confused, and doubtful at first, but Fleck says that it's worth a try.

After Fleck leaves, Crookedkit offers to watch Mitzi's kits while she goes and gets a drink, and promises to keep them in the hollow until either she or Fleck return. To keep them busy, he tries to teach the kits how to play moss-ball, and Magpie curiously asks what the game is. It's noted that his cough stopped, but his mew was still a little croaky.

Magpie is seen about a moon later, his cough never again mentioned. While Crookedkit and Fleck are out hunting, Fleck realizes that the Twolegs are harvesting the field, meaning they're cutting the corn. Crookedkit then realizes that Mitzi and her kits are in trouble, and they rush to save them. Magpie seems scared, wailing something about the monsters that are coming. Fleck takes Magpie and gets him to safety, along with Piper and Mist. However, during the panic, Soot, one of Magpie's other littermates, goes missing. Crookedkit offers to find the missing kit, and when he does, Soot is terrified. When Crookedkit announces that he's leaving, Magpie and his littermates all gaze up at Crookedkit with enormous eyes.

When Crookedpaw is on his way to the Moonstone, he meets one of Magpie's sisters, Soot. When asked about her siblings, she explains to Crookedpaw that she was told by Fleck that Magpie and Mist were taken to hunt mice on another farm, and she's unsure of how they're doing, but she thinks they're fine.

Crookedpaw vows to never forget the farm cats, or the memories he made while with them.
