"Oh Marigoldkit, Mintkit, I'm so sorry you had to die alone and scared. I would have saved you if I could, I promise." |
— Yellowfang reflecting on the kits' deaths in Yellowfang's Secret, page 495 |
Marigoldkit is a tiny tortoiseshell she-cat.[6]
Marigoldkit was a ShadowClan kit. She and her brother, Mintkit, were born in ShadowClan in Brightflower and Brackenfoot's second litter. The two kits were into training and battles, despite not being a single moon old, due to Brokenstar wanting them to be strong. She and her brother went to explore outside of camp, and their bodies were discovered by Yellowfang. Despite Yellowfang theorizing that it was a fox, Brokenstar blamed her instead and the medicine cat was exiled. She was mentioned by Yellowfang when the former ShadowClan cat described her exile. Brokenstar confessed to murdering them, and called them weak.
History[]
In The Prophecies Begin arc[]
Into the Wild[]
- Although not mentioned by name, Yellowfang describes to Fireheart the details of her banishment from ShadowClan, recounting her experience of being blamed for the deaths of two kits that Brokenstar had killed during a training session. Later, when Yellowfang is confronting Brokenstar, she asks him if Brightflower's kits had deserved to die. Brokenstar confirms that the kits died at his claws, and Brightflower is grief-stricken at the revelation.

Yellowfang's Secret[]
- "In that case, we'll keep practicing our battle moves, thanks. Brokenstar said it's important to be as strong as we can before he gives us our mentors."
- ―Marigoldkit to Yellowfang, when Yellowfang offers to play a game with them Yellowfang's Secret, page 480
- Yellowfang sees Marigoldkit and Mintkit in the clearing of the ShadowClan camp playing battle, but Yellowfang thinks that the kits are too young to be playing battle. She bounds across the clearing and offers Mintkit and Marigoldkit her tail to play with, but they refuse. She then holds her paw up and asks them to jump to see who could jump the highest; Mintkit asks if it was part of warrior training, and Yellowfang replies that it was not. Marigoldkit then politely refuses, as she and her littermate want to practice warrior training, due to the fact that Brokenstar had told them that it's important to be strong as possible when they become apprentices. Brightflower pads up to Yellowfang and remarks on how strong the kits were getting.
- Later, Marigoldkit and Mintkit go missing. Yellowfang and Brightflower frantically search. Yellowfang asks the warrior, Clawface, where he thought the kits could be. He replies that they had asked him about going on patrol earlier. Yellowfang sees a patrol coming back and asks them if they have seen the kits, but the cats reply that they had not. Yellowfang then ventures out of the camp to look for the kits.
- As Yellowfang is following a scent, she hears a fox in the distance, and she hopes that the fox had not found the kits. Yellowfang then catches the scent of blood. She finds the bodies in a clearing, and checks for any sign of life. Yellowfang desperately looks around the clearing for anything that could stop the blood flow, and is disappointed to find nothing. She curls her body around the two dead kits and Brightflower races into the clearing, followed by Brokenstar. When Brightflower sees the limp bodies she lets out a wail. Brokenstar suspects that Yellowfang killed the kits, and the Clan believes him. Yellowfang is then banished, and as she wanders in a state of grief and fury, she silently thinks that if there was any way that she could have saved Marigoldkit and Mintkit, she would have, and hopes that they're playing with her daughters in StarClan, watched by Silverflame.
In the Novellas[]
Blackfoot's Reckoning[]
- Before attacking the ThunderClan camp, Blackfoot thinks about Marigoldkit and Mintkit, beginning to feel righteousness.
- During the raid, Blackfoot is confronted by Rosetail, who defends the kits ShadowClan intends to steal. During the duel, Blackfoot unintentionally kills the ThunderClan elder. Before he and his patrol could complete their missions, Blackfoot is confronted by Yellowfang. He accuses the medicine cat of murdering her sisters. Yellowfang denies this and tells Blackfoot that he should know better than to believe Brokenstar's lies and says that he has always been foolish. The tom stubbornly refuses to believe her before he and his patrol are forced to surrender and flee ThunderClan's camp. Back in the present, Blackfoot begins to question his actions after he relives that memory, and he asks Rosetail if Yellowfang killed the kits, but no one answers.
- Later, Blackfoot remembers that Brokenstar had caused many kits' deaths.

Trivia[]
Mistakes[]
- There is an inconsistency in the deaths of Marigoldkit and Mintkit among the books: In Into the Wild, though the kits are not mentioned by name, Brightflower's kits are killed by Brokenstar during a training session and are brought back to ShadowClan camp where Brokenstar blames Yellowfang for their deaths.[5] However, in Yellowfang's Secret, Yellowfang believes a fox is responsible due to hearing one bark and their scent, but her Clanmates find no proof of a fox and blame her instead.[4]
- Marigoldkit and Mintkit were mistakenly referred as Yellowfang's half-siblings.[12]
- In The Prophecies Begin, volume 1, Yellowfang refers to Marigoldkit and Mintkit as "two apprentices",[13] despite never earning the rank.[4] Brokenstar even refers to them as kits when admitting he killed them.[14]
Continuity[]
The following information is from sources considered non-canon, retconned, or from adapted material.
- On Vicky's Facebook, Mintkit and Marigoldkit were killed by Brokenstar and the fox scent was convenient.[15]
