Bailey takes her two kits, Melody and Leo, into WindClan's territory to practice hunting where they encounter Mudclaw, Wrenflight, Deadfoot, and Onepaw. While the WindClan patrol escorts the three kittypets back to their Twolegplace, Onepaw strikes up a conversation with Melody and Leo. However, they are attacked by a badger and Melody and Leo wish to help. Bailey bravely defends her kits and helps chase off the badger. The WindClan cats are impressed, and Bailey asks if her kits can join WindClan. While Leo is excited at the prospect, Melody rolls her eyes. Bailey presents her case to Tallstar, wishing her kits to know how to survive. When asked if they wish to be warriors, Leo is excited while Melody is hesitant. Tallstar allows to them to join as a trial run though they are prohibited from participating in Gatherings. Melody and Leo are renamed as apprentices to Tansypaw and Brushpaw, with Wrenflight and Mudclaw as their mentors respectively.

During their first day, Tansypaw and Wrenflight go on a hunting patrol and Tansypaw chases after a rabbit. She excitedly tells her brother that they will be able to fight back the neighbor's dog with the skills they have learned from their mentors, though Brushpaw reminds her they are WindClan cats now. Tansypaw is briefly conflicted before shrugging it off and talking about her Twolegs. Nearly a moon later, Tansypaw grows frustrated with Clan life and grumbles about waking up early and living in the cold. During the dawn patrol, Tansypaw argues with Wrenflight about having to hide from a RiverClan patrol. Back in camp, Wrenflight punishes Tansypaw for arguing with her by ordering her to remove the elders' ticks. Tansypaw complains to her mother but Bailey insists her daughter should listen to Wrenflight. While Tansypaw uses the mouse-bile to take off Plumclaw's ticks, the elders comfort Tansypaw. After she has finished, Tansypaw complains to Brushpaw, Morningpaw, Ashpaw, and Onepaw. At Onepaw's curiosity, Tansypaw and Brushpaw invite the other apprentices to explore the Twolegplace.

While exploring the Twolegplace, Tansypaw and Brushpaw get lost since they have not ventured far beyond their Twoleg nest without their mother's guidance. The four apprentices take shelter in a monster den when it rains but they accidentally sleep through the night and wake up at dawn. The apprentices hurry back to their camp but are met by a furious WindClan patrol searching for them. Tallstar is inclined to send Tansypaw and Brushpaw away for their foolish idea but Onepaw and Morningpaw stand up for their denmates. Tallstar allows them to stay, but punishes them by hunting for elders, Barkface, and the nursery. While cleaning the nursery, Tansypaw and Brushpaw are tempted to return to their housefolk, but Onepaw and Morningpaw convince them to stay.

Two moons later, the apprentices have their warrior assessments. However, Tansypaw and Brushpaw fail to catch anything. Tallstar expresses his disappointment and concludes this test trial has failed. Tansypaw decides to return to her housefolk as a kittypet, though she thanks Wrenflight for her mentorship. Brushpaw decides to stay and continue his training, and Bailey stays with him. However, Brushpaw dies from infected wounds inflicted during a battle. Onewhisker accompanies Bailey back to her Twoleg nest. Smoke greets them and informs Bailey that Melody is back in her den. Seasons later, Onewhisker checks the Twolegplace for Crowpaw, and he finds Melody and several other kittypets. After promising to keep an eye out for Crowpaw, Onewhisker, Melody, and the other kittypets share some of Dudley's treats.

Seasons later, Onestar returns to the forest territories to check on Smoke and Darkkit. He meets Snowflake who directs him to Melody. Melody is pleased to see her old friend again and is even more impressed now that he's Clan leader. Onestar also share that he has seen Brushpaw in StarClan. Melody is pleased to hear that her brother is happy, but she also shares how her mother Bailey died a few moons ago. Onestar asks about Smoke and Darkkit, prompting Melody to dive into how Smoke and Darkkit—now Darktail—lived with another Twoleg before they had to leave due to Darktail's cruel behavior. Smoke was killed by a monster on the Thunderpath and Darktail disappeared not long after. Melody also shares how she suspected Onestar was Darktail's father and she takes Onestar to Smoke's grave. Melody then bids farewell to Onestar.
